Need A Good .308 Hunting Round...
So, I've finally decided it's time to get into hunting. I chose the .308 Winchester for caliber. Now, I just gotta get some advice on what type bullet to use.
I'd be mainly using it for deer and possibly bear.
I picked up a Remington 770 in .308 Winchester and upgraded the stock scope to a Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x50mm Riflescope. I've been suprised with the accuracy as I've been able to hit 300 yards with ease.
WHAT TYPE BULLET / ROUND WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR DEER?

I would use 150 gr Psp or 165 gr Psp. Deer dont know the difference if you spend $10 a box of $30 a box for ammo. If your planning to hunt alot in the woods as compared to open field hunting. The 6 power scope will become a real bitch for close range running deer. I would consider a 3x9 and keep it at 3 power for woods hunting. my $00.02

PRVI 165gr BTSP shoot good and are cheap - you have a cheap gun and with some cheap ammo you should be able to enjoy some deer meat.
Good luck - Deer meat taste the same when it's killed with high dollar rifle and scope, as a couple hundred dollar outfit like yours.
Let us know how you make out.

Buy some 150 grain ammo from different manufacturers, see which your gun likes. Start with the cheap stuff like Remington Corelokts or Winchester Power Points. There is no need for premium bullets (Barnes, Partitions, etc) when hunting deer with a 308. Don't overlook roundnose bullets, sometimes they will shoot better than spitzers and give up very little in trajectory or energy out to 300 yds. Beyond that is a different ballgame.
If your gun doesn't like the 150 grainers, then try the same brands with 165 grain bullets.
Although tiny groups are nice, any ammo that consistently puts 3 shots in 1.5 inches at 100 yds will be fine.
I know you didn't ask about the scope but I too think you have more power and size than you need. Keep it on the lowest setting and it'll work. I've used a 6X Leupold on my 270 for 30 years and have killed deer as close as 15 yds and as far as 350 with that combination.

I've had great luck with Winchester Ballistic Silver Tips (Nosler Designed Bullet) in my 30-06. I use 168 grain for bear and deer. I wouldn't hesitate to buy them in 308 if I had one. These are also available as a component if you reload or plan too.

Hey Johnathan,
Where will you be hunting? Depending on the answer your scope may actually be overkill and hinder you. The areas I hunt in Lancaster and Tioga counties both don't allow for shots over 100 yards, many of my deer coming 50 yards and under.
The .308 is fine for deer, they aren't tough animals. 150-180 grains should suffice. My 25-06 knocks em dead so you'll be fine with pretty much any load you choose. Just make sure the shot is good.

I use the Nosler Accubonds. My 257 weahterby loves them but the deer don`t. My 308 rem vsf loves the 150 gr Accubonds and my new Thompson Venture loves the 150 gr 150 SST superformance. Do your job and put the bullet where it will wipe out the lungs and just about any bullet will work. Which ever bullet shoots best is the one you should use.

As some others have said deer are not hard to kill so normal traditional bullets like the Rem cor-loks and the win power points will be just fine 150 gr will work for deer and bear . Just shoot then through the lungs/heart and you'll be fine.
