Default Your aggressor has a shotgun and you have a pistol....

If you find a aggressor has a shot gun and you have you sidearm, do you react differently to the mismatch of weapons and how do you react?

Well, since I have him outgunned already, I'll give him a ten second head start...

    ETA:
Sorry. Didn't notice this was in the "Training/Tactics" section, or I wouldn't have posted that.
On a serious note though, depending on the scenario, I really MAY have him outgunned. Hmmm...

Depends on the situation and if I can retreat. It depends on the cover available. It depends on the skills of the shooters.

The pistol can handle better in tight situations, but in most cases I'd work hard to get the tactical upperhand or retreat because a shotgun will tear you up in any sort of chokepoint. A good wingshooter will also beat you in anything but arms length distances.

Pray for HARD cover and somehow manage to get to it without taking a OO buck load to the body.....That would be a great start.

Also think about what they may have that shotgun loaded with.

Slugs, Sabots, 00 Buckshot or any variety of exotic loads available on the market today.

I'd say try to retreat and if you cannot look for the best cover available and hold out.

You may have an advantage, but the shotgun will tear through light cover and you.

Too many variables. Distance between you and the aggressor and the environment (cars/buildings/etc) would be the deciding factor as to your choices of a course of action. I'm pretty sure he wins between 2-25 yards out in the open and if he has a bead on you and your pistol is still holstered. Increasing your distance increases you chances of him missing and you escaping. I wouldn't want to trade fire with a guy and his shotgun armed only with my pistol.

Sorry to be repetitive but it depends on the situation.

I know for a fact that I am more accurate with my handgun then an untrained fella is trying to shoot from the hip (literally). I also know that I have a much higher rate of fire then he does if he has a pump shotgun. I know that if it is the middle of winter and all he has is birdshot my leather jacket and heavy shirts would go a long way in keeping me alive.

Of course, if he is firing 00 from the shoulder with an autoloader I might have to leave the handgun in the holster and duck.

Probably best to avoid that situation altogether.

You have problems you may or not be able to overcome. Tactics, training and most of all good luck in this situation will determine the outcome.

I wouldn't change my reaction based on their weapon, except for a limited few scenarios. Whether they have a Raven .25 or Mossberg 500, the drill is the same; quickly move away and towards cover while engaging. An armed threat to my life is an armed threat to my life, and a .22lr can kill you just as dead on the first shot as a 1oz slug.
