.500 S&W, anything else might as well be a BB gun!
Doesn't matter what you shoot, as long as you shoot it well. I shoot .45ACP out of a 1911, some people shoot .32ACP from a Beretta Tomcat. If he is a better shot than I am, then I'm dead.
He who makes the first hole, usually wins... lol

Re: Which round is better for self defense, 9mm or .40 S&W
I kind of skipped .40. I carry either 9mm (lots of bullets) or .45 (big holes). I agree that .40 doesn't appear to have enough of an advantage over 9mm (and that's one more kind of ammo to store danggit).
I did hear the .357 magnum comment though That's a whole different ballgame. Watch the video of the .357 magnum hitting the gel on BrassFetcher site, compared to the other calibers.Stay frosty....

Re: Which round is better for self defense, 9mm or .40 S&W
I must disagree about the "he who makes the first hole" wins comment. Pistol rounds, from .22 to .45 all suck in terms of damage to the human body. Unless you can burry a round in the top third of my central nervous system, I am continuing to fight. Your chances of survival if you are hit "center mass" without a direct central nervous system hit are very high.

P.S. This is the new thread that I am hoping eclipses the "girls with guns" thread in total numbers. It shouldn't take too long.

I personally believe in the "bigger hole better results" theory, but I can understand 'many small holes' theory also. I hope to never test that, and I think if I was a zombie I would object just as strenuously if either was used against me.
MY semis (and EDC) are 45 ACP.Marty near God's Country. Making good people defenseless doesn’t make bad people harmless.

Re: Which round is better for self defense, 9mm or .40 S&W
I'm holding the gun and my friend Nate has his arm up for reference. By the way I used to carry 45 ACP and it is still one of my favorite rounds but I will now be carrying 10mm, swamp fox makes a 135gr nosler round that is 1700 fps and 865 ft/lbs energy@ Muzzle couple that with 15 rounds in the gun and 30 on my side and I am good to go, and during the winter I will be going with the swamp fox 165gr speer gold dot..1400fps 715 ft/lbs energy@ Muzzle
