Discoloring inside the slide on my SIG?
Hoping this is not what I think it is, but perhaps something else.
The pictures are a bit blurry, but you can see the discoloration on the inside of the slide, right above where the barrel sits.
Is this rust? Or something else?

Stainless slide, can't rust. Mine looks like that too... and it has about 2000 rds through it and hasn't broke yet. Maybe its from when they put the nitron coating on.

This. ^^^^^^^
Stainless steels can and do rust. Protect your firearms accordingly.
We don't even know what Sig we're talking about here. Hard to be positive it's stainless.
The picture sucks. (No offense). Is the gun clean of powder residue?
Also, how new, (or old is the gun)? Having never bought a new Sig I don't know, but many new pistols come from the factory in a packing grease.Last edited by rwb1500; September 29th, 2011 at 11:30 PM.

Re: Discoloring inside the slide on my SIG?
That almost looks like heat caused discoloration. Sorta like case-coloring.

Re: Discoloring inside the slide on my SIG?
Stainless steel must contain at least 10.5 % chromium. It is this element that reacts with the oxygen in the air to form a complex chrome-oxide surface layer that is invisible but strong enough to prevent further oxygen from "staining" (rusting) the surface. Higher levels of chromium and the addition of other alloying elements such as nickel and molybdenum enhance this surface layer and improve the corrosion resistance of the stainless material.
Stainless does not "rust" as you think of regular steel rusting with a red oxide on the surface that flakes off. If you see red rust it is probably due to some iron particles that have contaminated the surface of the stainless steel and it is these iron particles that are rusting. Look at the source of the rusting and see if you can remove it from the surface. If the iron is embedded in the surface, you can try a solution of 10% nitric and 2% hydrofluoric acid at room temperature or slightly heated. Wash area well with lots and lots of water after use. Commercially available "pickling paste" can also be used.
I hope this helps.E FLUCTIBUS IRRUIT IN HOSTEM. AECIDAE TELO IACET LIBATIS.

It looks like the "bluing" you get on exhaust pipes on motorcycles near the heads and on the heat shields, caused by the heat of the pipes. They have cleaners for the pipes on bikes, see if it's safe to use on guns. Just trying to help, those who know don't flame me, I told him to ask if it's safe cause I don't know.
