    Default Duct tape HOLSTER?!

So I was in a local gun store today looking at holsters, and asked the owner if he had any tuckable holsters that would fit a 1911. He said that he did not, and asked what a tuckable holster was. I was shocked to hear the owner of a gun store ask that question. I explained it to him, and then we began talking about different types of holsters. We were discussing the steep prices for decent holsters, and he tells me he solved that problem by making his own. So I respond, "Leather or Kydex?" He smiles at me and says, "Duct tape."

I wasn't sure if I'd heard him right, and I said, "Duct tape?" So he lifts his shirt and reveals a Glock, sitting in a rather unattractive ensemble of duct tape with a metal clip attached to form an IWB holster. He pulls the entire "rig" out to show me. Everything seemed in order. It fit snugly, the trigger guard was completely covered, and the clip seemed sturdy. But still... Duct tape? Now, I personally am a huge fan of duct tape. I believe it is one of mankind's greatest achievements, capable of making wallets, neckties, shirts, and even the occasional prom night tuxedo, as well as being able to fix virtually anything under the sun, including cars. But I still wouldn't be comfortable carrying a firearm in it.

    Thoughts?

I am in agreement with this. I am not sure if this was a representative employee or a smaller LGS where you usually deal directly with the owner, but whomever this person is, they seem to lack some basic knowledge. Chances are, if they lack in areas where they are supposed to be more of an expert, they lack many other things, too. Common sense might be one of those.

I'm not saying you have to go elsewhere. I'm just saying it might be time to sit back and think how safe and/or reliable this individual might be. I personally love duct tape. I trust it with many tasks. But not my life.

Yeah, I politely excused myself after looking at his "creation".

There are several shops I can go to, but they are all about a half hour drive from where I live, give or take. There are only four places I can go in Rutland: There is Dick's, which I won't go to unless I'm desperate for overpriced ammunition, and Wal-Mart, which I buy most of my .45 and .22LR ammo from. Then there is Otter Valley Supply, which has a lot of good stuff and the cheapest 7.62x39 in town, and there is Cragin's, the one I was at today. I had never been inside, due to it being very small and not very popular with local shooters (now I know why).

There are some very good shops around, but as I stated, I have to drive about 30 minutes or more. I was hoping to find something in town and stopped in on a whim... I don't believe I'll be going back.

May as well throw Uncle Mike's in there while we are bashing sub-par holsters.

Perhaps in a SHTF situation, where I somehow have managed to lose my holster but still have my gun... Then yes, maybe in that strange and unlikely situation, I would use duct tape to fashion a holster in a pinch.

Otherwise, I'd rather spend the money.

Lol, I think I might have to agree with you on that one!
