I thought some of the more web-savvy members could lend some suggestions on doing searches... either by utilizing the forum's search, or another search engine.

I know Frenchy had posted something like this a while back, but I can't find it! (Ba-dum-dum! )

    Tips? Tricks? Suggestions?
    Anyone willing to help?(me )

I am (hoping) to eventually replace the built in vBulletin search with a custom search engine. That however is going to take some time.

Just to throw that out there.

If I can't find something in a forum's search tool I sometimes go to google and enter the following:
+site:www.anything.com +search term -search term "search term"

For example, looking for a Glock G23 for sale here you would enter:
    +site:www.pafoa.org/forum +glock +g23 "for sale"

I use Google sometimes but I usually don't have a problem with VB's search feature. You just have to choose your search words carefully...

Google works pretty well, just add this into the search field along with your query

I always try to suggest or recommend using the Search, especially when I'm closing threads because there's already a topic on the subject. However, for all the forum veterans, let's not get amnesia or suggest that people yell. There have been users in the past who "did their part" to "yell" at the noobs for posting the same crap over and over without using the search. Those people were subsequently scolded as being unfriendly to new users and working against what we're trying to achieve with this site, to the point where some of those users have severly curatiled their participation on the site, or have dropped off altogether. I'm not going to be a hypocrite and say I didn't have a part in correcting said individuals, but to a certain extent I did agree and understand their frustration with people posting the same stuff over, and over, and over...

While we shouldn't be overly aggressive with new users who may be unfamiliar with the site, the topics discussed, and how to search for information, don't be afraid to tell users when there's already a thread about something they're discussing.

See, if you can...use words that are not common to this forum to search for! I typed in "sippin whiskey" and this is what I got...
