    Question webley Mark 4

on the Webley barrel by the cylinder it tells to the caliber and it is stamped 3 1/2 ton. What is meant by 3 1/2 tons. Also, is there a way of telling when this thing was produced by the serial number? Thanks for all your help.

Three and a half tons with a square and a " next to it are the Proof markings for the 380/200 round or better known as the S&W 38 this side of the pond. The regular load was a 178 grain clad bullet at ~625-650 fps. Slow but it certainly killed or wounded a lot of enemy soldiers.

Yours will probably have a "war finish" stamp on it. If not then it will be an A or B prefix. The A prefix were made in the 1946-~1950 or so time frame and the B prefix until ~1955 or so. Regular barrel length is 5". You may see the so-called "special length" pistols. These are fakes, often made by importers to sell them Quite common in its half brother the Enfield Mk 2 series.

If you post the SN, I may be able to give you an idea of the year. Dave_n (I have 4 of these and four of the Enfields).
