Kids Find Gun In Playground After South Side Shooting

Man Shot During Robbery On Jane Street


PITTSBURGH -- A young man was arrested following a shooting on the South Side, and the gun that investigators think he used was found by children at a local elementary school on Friday morning.
Pittsburgh police said they were called to the 1800 block of Jane Street at about 2:30 a.m. and found a man leaning against a wall, bleeding from his right side and right arm. He was taken to UPMC Mercy in stable condition.
According to the criminal complaint, the victim told police that he was walking with some friends when a man wearing a clown mask and a dark hoodie approached from behind and demanded money and shot him when he said he didn't have any money to give.

Suspect Arrested
Another person told police that he was robbed of $4 by a second man with a gun who wore a dark ski mask and a hoodie.
While the second robber turned to walk away, his victim heard the gunshot and then saw all three robbers start running across the street, heading left on South 19th Street toward East Carson Street, police said.
As they searched the area, police said they saw Marlon Spencer, 19, of Wilkinsburg, wearing a dark blue hoodie and sweating heavily. They said they saw him throw something -- which turned out to be a black ski mask -- to the ground.

Spencer was frisked, and police said they found marijuana and a loaded .45-caliber magazine from a handgun on him. Police also said they found a .45 casing at the shooting scene that matched the ammunition they found on Spencer.
Students from Phillips K-5 elementary school were lining up at their playground near Sarah Street on Friday morning when some of them spotted a gun in a locked, fenced area of the playground. Police think that weapon was used in the robbery hours earlier.
Pittsburgh Public Schools Police Chief Bob Fadzen said the gun was not loaded when the kids found it.
Spencer was arrested and charged with robbery and aggravated assault, police said. Nobody else has been arrested or identified as a suspect yet.
