    Default Smith&Wesson M&P9 Slide Release

Hi All, I am in a pre-employent/training process with a private security company. Last week we received 40 hrs. of training with the S&W M&P9. This pistol is new to me. I own and shoot Glock 17, 19, 34, as well as the Beretta 92FS and the Sig P226 (9MM).

From the very first time I inserted a magazine, with the slide locked open, in the mag well, the slide released and chambered the round. I did not touch the slide release. During the training, I inserted magazines over 85 mag reloads. The slide always released on its own.

Is this normal for the M&P9.

No that's not normal. Talk to your armorer about getting that one replaced. I have a M&P9 and M&P9c and both stay locked to the rear. We use older Beretta 92s at work and sometimes at the range that will happen because they're getting old and worn out, but not each and every time. Something is wrong if its doing it every time.

I have a M&P9 and M&P9c, which I know is in a different caliber, but i have never had that happen. I have, however, read about the slide coming forward with aggressive reloads on different forums. I'll try to dig something up.

The OP in this thread dosen't make sense to me but, FWIW.....

It happens, and is frequently brought up on the M&P forums:

I had it happen on my M&P 45 full-sized pistols. It isn't limited to M&Ps, and personally I wouldn't worry about it.

You are likely hitting the rear of the frame. Have someone watch you at home with some dummy rounds. Of 4 M&P's I have had all of them did it when you hit the frame, none did it when you didn't. This extends to others that I know as well.

You have to be gentle inserting mags.
My M&P9 also does it too easily for my liking.
You have to get into a habit of inserting the mag, not slamming it in.
Some say it has to do with the angle that you insert it, but I havnt been able to confirm that

It should not be relied on for reloads as it has problems cambering JHP rounds, and even FMJ from time to time

Its the way your slamming the magazine into the chamber.although It is possible it could be a malfunction with the gun.

I know with my glock it will release the slide if inserting a fresh mag,but only if done a certain way.Sometimes it will jam the round(gasp! In a glock you say?!) If forced in wrong.

Its not something I would rely on as the round dosent alway chamber.

I spoke to Smith & Wesson as this happened to my husband and I also - we thought there was something wrong with the slide.

It is actually designed to do that !! It is for combat quick loading - insert forcefully and you are loaded in 1 step !!!

If you dont like it - which i actually do now, just be gentle when inserting the magazine.

It's a slide lock not a slide release. That's the first problem. Treat it as a lock not a release. Use the slingshot method to release the slide and load the gun. If you constantly use the slide lock it will wear and can cause the slide to slam forward during a reload.

    Here's your sign.

The Glock 19 is a handy little tool. Try not to force the M&P when reloading a very large amount of magazines
