At that point, it would be, but the police skipped a few steps (IMO). 18 Pa.C.S. §(c)(4) - the section that prohibits possession based on involuntary commitment - has the following caveat:

This paragraph shall not apply to any proceeding under section 302 of the Mental Health Procedures Act unless the examining physician has issued a certification that inpatient care was necessary or that the person was committable.

I would submit that the seizure was improper because it is impossible for the police to know the outcome of the commitment at the time they placed this man into custody. Until the condition noted above has been met, there are no legal grounds to use the commitment as a basis for the seizure.

Now I know in the land of Civil Forfeiture that taking isn't a big deal like it used to be, but that says nothing good about Civil Forfeiture either.

There is very strict criteria to be involuntarily commited. The petitioner must prove that you are a harm to yourself, others or can no longer take care of yourself. No doctor will commit just for owning firearms and not agreeing with the government. It's also a two doctor process to 302 someone.
