    Default HELP!!!! RUST...

I have a STI Trojan that I haven't messed with for a few months. I got her out today and low and behold all of the cerations and markings on the slide were rusted. Now this pistol was stored in a safe with the other guns. I have enought desicants in there to handle 10 times the space and I religiously clean after every time they are used. I am not sure what was used last time, but it was either CLP or Weapon Shield. Bottom line is I need a recomendation to help get the rust off or a new finish for the slide to prevent it from happening. I have read that others have had the same issue with STI. I have a call in, we'll see what happens with that...

I applied a liberal amount of Weapon Shield to the areas and placed it into a baggie to let it work overnight. I'll take a soft bristle toothbrush to it tomorrow and report back. I haven't heard back from STI yet. Go figure. Thanks for the suggestions.

Don't jump right to steel wool. It WILL take the bluing off.

Also, check the backstrap, trigger guard, front strap, and trigger itself for rust too.

It sounds like you put it away with sweat/oils from your hands on the gun.

I'm not going to use the steel wool. It's rusting inside the grip cerations and at the logos. I don't think my finger oils can get to those spots. Apparently, from what I've read it is a known problem with the finish that has been corrected.

I use Kroil, a fiber brush with stiff bristles and a rag. That seems to work pretty well for me. If it is a persistent problem and you have tried multiple methods for dealing with the rust, then maybe its time to start thinking about a Cerakote or Robar's finishes. Sucks that its a known issue with a mostly reputable manufacturer though.

Navel Jelly will eat any rust that is there and you can brush it away with a fine bristle tooth brush and some mineral spirits. Once you've wiped it dry, reoil with 100% silicone spray. Just like Taurus and some other manufacturers, the engravings are done at the end, so it is bare metal you are dealing with. Blued guns will rust faster or easier than a parkerized gun. It is important to keep a rust preventative on it, no matter who makes it. The cool thing about silicone spray is it works, does not feel greasy, and easily wipes off when you want to shoot or carry the gun. It is part of my madness and JMHO.
BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.
