    Default New Taurus Revolver Care/Cleaning

Just picked up my new Taurus 85 and I'm wondering what you guys do initially to clean them? I heard pop out the side plate and spray with CLP . . excuse my ignorance but what is CLP? Thanks alot for the help.

It is a WD40 knock off. It is not a bad idea to do it if you want to, just relube it with a good oil and don't rely on the CLP as your primary lube. Get some thick oil on the trigger assembly. In my opinion and from what I have experienced, it helps with trigger creep. Many ways and methods to the madness of cleaning and lubing a gun. There is really none that is precisely correct, except in the eyes of the cleaner. JMHO

I use Bel Ray motorcycle chain lube on all the moving parts of my guns, especially the slide to frame areas. I oil all the small mechanisms with a good oil, and I use Bel Ray wheel bearing grease on all of the trigger parts. This is my madness. JFWIW.

Never open a sideplate unless you are having to repair the gun, or if dirt gets in there from falling in a mudhole.

I don't think I would spray the interior down with CLP. The moving parts should contain a very light amount of lubricant. Large amounts of lubricant attracts grit, and dirt. If you are going to re-lubricate the interior, use very small amounts of a synthetic lubricant.

I'm a big fan of Militec http://www.militec1.com/, but any quality lube will work.

Do yourself a favor though and don't use WD-40 on any guns. It will strip off lube and kill primers if you get it on your ammo.

I stand corrected. It will kill unloaded primers. I use this to "deactivate" funky primers when reloading. It does strip lube though, so CLP is probably a better choice.

Don't open the side plate period, unless you know what you're doing. It's scary in there.
