Lightbulb Re: How strong are AR buffer tubes?

MOST tubes are made of 6061 aluminum, although there are some tougher 7075 tubes out there to be had.

SOUNDS like you had the wrong size stock (commerical), and were trying to slip it over a mil-spec tube. Mil-spec stocks for Mil-spec tubes, dude!

That said, fire the gun. If the buffer hangs in the tube, ya' beat on it too damn much. If it DOESN'T, then you're fine.

Now - take a box cutter, cut that silly tape off, and go buy yerself the CORRECT stock!!!

Thanks for the advice. I'll try that.

With that said, both the tube and stock are definitely mil-spec. The very, very minimal play between the stock and tube are simply machining-tolerance differences.

You have no idea how much force can be applied to that tube in line with the stock. The things that will get you are forces being applied that are lateral. If you hit it how I think you did, trying to drive the stock straight off the back of the tube using a wood board as leverage, the force was being applied to the lower receiver at the magwell. And the tube at it's threads. But being in line with the rifle itself, is where the tube is the strongest.

Yeah, that's exactly right. Linear force with regards to the tube, stock, and lower receiver. All force was transferred through the tube/threads/magwell into the magazine stand.

I was scared I'd weakened the threads to the point where later on their life, they might just shear right off, but it seems I was just worrying. Thanks man, that was the exact answer I was looking for.
