Re: Jovino custom
John Jovino Inc. was a NYC gun shop / gun retailer / importer. They were known for their custom work on S&W Model 25s in particular, with barrels shortened as far as possible without touching the extractor.
Some had shortened / reduced grip to the K profile, but these were in the minority. Some were made to be DAO. Their name for these guns was "Effector." Jovino Effectors were also made from Model 24s and 27s upon request, but the majority were 25s in 45 ACP. Efectors have a cult collector following similar to the Colt New Service "Fitz Specials."
Side note: Jovino imported thousands of Australian No. 1 Mk III SMLE rifles, barreled actions, and parts in the 90s, and sold both as built guns and assembled guns from parts. The parts Aussie SMLEs are infamous because many do not have copper / brass recoil blocks in the forend to take on thr recoil impulse to prevent the stock from splitting the indigenous Aussie wood. Firing these bitsers can and does result in cracking of the rear of the forend. The location of these small copper or brass blocks is difficult to describe. I once owned three Jovino Aussie SMLEs, all with the copper blocks, but have since sold them. They were import marked below the right mounting of the charger clip guide in tiny lettering. Many people don't see it, and because there's no marking on the barrel they assume these aren't import marked (the sound of PAFOA members scraping chairs and spinning safe dials to check their "not import marked" Aussie SMLEs).
