I'll be watching this thread too, I have tried this in the past and the results weren't very good, lots of little air bubbles.

Re: Seeking start to FINISH on stock refinshing
Actually not that hard to do and the results are extremely satisfying. First I would suggest posting a pic of the stock you want to work on so we can see what is needed. Any cracks? gouges? etc? What kind of finish?

It may be made for paintball gun re-finishing, but this is a good place with tips - http://www.mcarterbrown.com/forums/s...finishing.html
Then again, the guns talked about there are worth more than any of my firearms....

Great pun there...stock refinishing: start to FINISH!
Hopefully you won't have to learn it the way I learned bricklaying.....by trowel-and-error.There are three kinds of people in this world....them what's good at math and them what ain't.

I'm sure someone on the forum could explain it. At this point it's just a big hunk of wood to me. I learn everything the hard way too.

Re: Seeking start to FINISH on stock refinshing
Here is how I did my old Remington .22 semi-auto:
Sand smooth as glass with progressivly finer grains of sandpaper and finish it off with 0000 steel wool.
For a finish, I used the Minwax stain with polyurethane, and foam brushes. Between coats, use a new brush (they're cheap as hell) and wet sand with 0000 steel wool that has been degreased and cleaned.
Apply finish and sand until you get the color and shine you want.
The poly and stain, looks beautiful, and locks in the moisture. Take it in the swamp, or up in the mountains, and nothing changes... No swelling or shrinking...
