Mis-, Dis, or Information?

My friend just bought a little Kel-Tec at our local gun shop....
he was told by the owner that there is a spent bullet from every gun now sold that sits somewhere for ballistics testing comparison.
I am guessing that this comes from the spent casing in many guns now days.

How about your thoughts on this?

I know some of the members here are dealers....so we can get a little inside info at times too

A couple places in the USA requires that a fired sample casing be submitted by the dealer or transferee at the time of purchase. Manufacturers provide the casing - sometimes being the proofing round. If the casing isn't present, the gun has to be sent in, or arrangements made to have a sample taken by live fire under official witness(police). (if I remember correctly)

The bullet itself fired by the manufacturer isn't turned in.

The empty cases are for the states that require them. Maryland was one of the staes that required the empty case be sent to the State Police at the time of sale in the state. The last I recall reading on (Maryland) it was that there were no crimes solved using any of the empty cases and it was considered a failure. I don't know that the practice has been stopped in Maryland. There were other states that also required the fired casings, but I don't recall off the top of my head which states. The reason the empty cases are in the box is because that particular arm was not sold in one of the requiring states.

It is my understanding that the fired bullets are not kept for any ID purposes.

So, your friend has received some incorrect information.

According to someone in the know, casings, and more so the firing pin strikes and extractor marks are more utilized and are a more reliable way to tell what fired what. Forget the CSI nonsense of looking at bullets under a microscope. That is why THE CASING is the thing that is required to be sent in certain jurisdictions, NOT the fired bullet.

i know they don't keep the bullet. but i think even the casing itself would be useless if you change the barrel.

i can see how it might work with the marks left on the primer by the firing pin. the firing pin stays the same even if you replace the barrel/chamber.

but the casing itself is marked by the chamber (at least i think that is where the marks they use come from). and, when you replace the barrel in a glock at least, you are also replacing the chamber.

i also gotta think that 5 seconds with a file would change the marks left on the primer by the firing pin.
