Newbie question regarding LTCF application
Hello,
New member to the forum - somewhat long time enthusiast but happy to be spending more time recently putting holes in paper.
After having my local PD fill out my check card, I'm heading to Norristown early next week with my application. Here's the question...
Does it matter what you checkoff for the reason for wanting the LTCF permit? I am primarily interested in target shooting but plan to carry at times so have checked off "target shooting" on the application. Does it really matter?
Have been reading this forum with interest the last few weeks and appreciate any answers...
Thanks!

Re: Newbie question regarding LTCF application
I can't remember which ones exactly but I checked off multiple boxes including both target shooting and self defense. When I got my LTCF it just says self defense on it. Northampton county here.

Re: Newbie question regarding LTCF application
From what I understand the boxes are simply to put on your LTCF what reason you wanted to carry. In PA we have shall-issue so you could write whatever you wish in the box but most folks I assume just put 'self-defense' as their choice. So you should be fine for whatever reason you put.

Re: Newbie question regarding LTCF application
Appreciate the input - I checked "self defense". Folks at the Sheriff's office were very nice and the actual process of handing in my application, waiting for the online background check, paying and getting my picture taken was smoothly handled and courteously and professionally done. In and out in about 20 minutes.
My local police check was also easily done (although I do understand there is no basis for this requirement) and took less than 2 weeks to make its way from my local police department to the Sheriff's department.
Look forward to reading and posting more on this forum.

Re: Newbie question regarding LTCF application
Welcome, ssbrad.
When I filled mine out, I thought about which one would do me the most good if they somehow started enacting (or inventing) new laws based on what you picked. I figured 'self defense' was the best option in that case. I imagined that they'd maybe say "if yours says 'target practice', then you can only carry it on the way to and from target practice".
I know that's paranoid, but more ridiculous things than that have happened.Tommy610, NRA Member, Romans 12:18

Re: Newbie question regarding LTCF application
Another reason to check "'self defense" is that if you are carrying in a reciprocal state and your LTCF reads "target shooting" or one of the other reasons, a cop who sees that may not realize that you are carrying legally.
"Self defense" is the best overall option to check

Re: Newbie question regarding LTCF application
I checked Target and Self Defense and mine says "Protection" on the card.
