Older Browning Rifles.
What were their bolt action rifles called before Abolt and xbolt? I have an older .243 on their website but the serial number decoder goes by model and there is no pictures.

Re: Older Browning Rifles.
Browning High Power rifles. There were three grades; Safari, Medallion, and Olympian. Upon introduction in 1959m all rifles were produced by FN in Belgium. The Safari Grade was the first of the line in 1959. In 1959 the standard Safari calibers were built on the large ring Mauser actions. These were the .264 Win. Mag., 270 Win., 7mm Rem. Mag., 30-06 Spring., 300 H&H Mag., 308 Norma Mag., .338 Win. Mag., 375 H&H Mag., and the .458 Win. Mag. In 1960 the .243 Win. and the .308 were introduced on the small ring Mauser action. These rifles are at a premium. There were a few large ring rifles produced in .243 Win. and .308 Win. These are really rare. In 1964 the Sako medium length action (L579) was introduced. These were produced in .22-250 Rem., 243 Win., .284 win., and .308 Win. Sako also provided barrek=led actions in the small action (L461). The calibers were .222Rem., &222. Rem. Mag.,
I realize I am being long winded here but I collect these fine rifles. Note that Sako was the only manufactureer that could stand up to the FN requirements. Sako did not produce finished rifles for FN.
The medallion and Olympian Grades followed in 1960.
If you want any more info as to production date or ? send me an IM.

Re: Older Browning Rifles.
What you have there is a Browning BBR rifle. These were made in Japan starting in 1977 to replace the Belgian Rifles. They were made in one grade only until 1984. In 1983 there was a Limited Edition of 1000 rifles. They were all 7mm Rem. Mags. The rifle shown is not one of the Limited Editions.
The BBR's are well made rifles.

Re: Older Browning Rifles.
Gus,
I cannot tell you very much about the rifle because the prefix B is a problem. the Browning long FN actions were prefixed (suffixed) with an L. (or very rarely no prefix). Check it again. Where is the serial number located?
The .264 Win. Mag. was produced in several different versions by Browning. Again, check the serial number and the location of the serial number. this is very important.

Re: Older Browning Rifles.
With the information you gave me I am pretty sure it is not a Browning. It is most likely a rifle built on the FN action. Keep in mind there were many riflemakers using this action. Browning was one of them. Browning rifles built up to 1968 (69) did not have the serial numbers on the receivers for the most part. The Gun Control Act of 1968 changed things a bit in regard to serial number placement. FN rifles were produced for Sears, Western Auto, and a lot of other retailers.
