Marlin 336 .30-30
I have been figuring of what kind of gun to buy. Does anyone own one of these?
If so how accurate and how powerful is it?

Re: Marlin 336 .30-30
About 1700-1900 ft lbs energy just like any other 30-30.
The 336 the oldest design in production for hunting rifles. ...Very well made pieces.
There are too many variables in the term "accuracy" or "accurate". In an average to good shooter's hands you can get 1" groups at 100yrds. In most peoples hands, 2 to 3in groups with open sights at same range. Dinner plate sized groups is all you need at the suggested max humane range of 150-200yrds, which is within Minute Of Deer.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515

Re: Marlin 336 .30-30
I have one that my Father handed down to me. Mine is accurate out to 150 yards with a scope. It is also accurate out to 100 yards with open sights. The open sight are only used at 75 yards or less. The 100 yards is at the range I use 170 grain Remington loads. The Marlin 336 is excellant for the tick brush. I take mine out if I am going to hunt where there is a lot of thick brush.
How far are you looking to shoot?
It is a good rifle for close range under 150 yards, almost no recoil.
My father has taken Whitetail deer and Black bear, I have only taken Whitetail deer with it.
If you are looking for further distance then you should go with a bolt action rifle. The truth shall set you free.

Re: Marlin 336 .30-30
I just bought one a few weeks ago, at my wife's father's suggestion, a deer hunter for many years, it's all he uses for deer. I've only shot about 60 rounds thru it and all of those at a short indoor range, but I have to tell ya, I like it, it is a fun gun. My first rifle. See a thread about it here:

The first targets you'll see are before I sighted the scope in, late in the thread the photo's show it was much more accurate, but again, at a very short distance.
Good luck in your quest,
Bill

Great shooter, reliable and plenty accurate for it's intended purpose (Deer and Bear hunting at short to moderate range). It and it's Winchester equivilant the model 94, have probably taken more deer than all other guns combined.

Re: Marlin 336 .30-30
I did all my deer hunting with one up until about 4 years ago (that makes it about 36 years) 30-30 is a great deer round as long as you remember its limitations. Not heavy, short and quick handling, scoped shoots very well and you now have the LeveRevolution ammo you can feed it for even more power and accuracy.

Re: Marlin 336 .30-30
Unless you are taking very long shots - longer than the majority of us should be taking - the 30-30 will do just fine. 336 is an excellent rifle. shooting under 150-175 yards, it doesn't matter weight bullet you shoot; use whatever groups best in your rifle. 150gr will be a little easier on the shoulder, but no 30-30 load hurts - they're all mild, a pleasure to shoot.
got a low-power scope on mine. If I shoot the deer in the right place - as you must with any rifle - it does the job, no caveats req'd.

Re: Marlin 336 .30-30
The .30-30 is a hawt caliber. Especially in the Marlin 336 platform.
I would recommend the slightly more powerful .35 remington cartridge. I've used a 336C in .35 rem for each year I've been hunting (all 11 of them) and I've never once felt undergunned where I hunt.
Also you might want to try Hornady LeverEvolution cartridges for the .30-30, it'll push your range out to 250 yards.
In any event kudos to your interest in lever action rifles.

Re: Marlin 336 .30-30
I have an old marlin 336 RC, opensights, and 100 yards I will get about 3" groups with off shelf ammo, I am not the best shot in the world, It is a smart little gun!
