H&R Sportsman Research
It has become apparent, recently, that there are some holes in the H&R SPORTSMAN history and development both in the Double Action 999 and the Single Action 199. More research is warranted to fill in those holes. IF you own any H&R SPORTSMAN and would like to contribute to the research, I would appreciate the following information (pics would be a great asset):
1. Serial Number (partials are welcome, but entire numbers will help more)?
2. Firing pin on hammer or mounted in frame?
3. Safety rim on cylinder? PATENT APPLIED FOR; one patent number; two patent numbers?
4. Cylinder release: 1" long lever on right side -or- small push button on left side of frame right in front of cylinder.
5. Location of Manufacturer's address - on top of barrel -or- on right side?
6. DA or SA?
7. Adjustable or fixed front sight? If fixed - soldered in slot or pinned in slot?
Thanks in advance. I'll provide era of manufacture and Model and Variation determination for your SPORTSMAN.Jim Hauff H&R Collector In memory of my friends Bill Goforth and Jim Ritchie.

Re: H&R Sportsman Research
I worked in a local gun shop as a kid in High School and had always lusted for a 999 but spent my money on center-fire weapons. I found a H & R Sportsman Single Action at a recent gun show and brought it home. $175.00 sounded like a fair price, it looks to have seen very little use but suffers some discoloration and slight pitting on the right side maybe from laying under a car seat on some damp carpet. It has a 6" barrel, 1" long lever cylinder latch, name on top of barrel, Ser # S39XX, safety recessed cylinder, adjustable front sight, patent number on OD of cylinder 1904730. I am curious of its vintage and if there is a cure for the intermittent operation of the extractor. I have not fully disassembled it yet and could not find a exploded view in either of the two NRA Firearms Assembly manuals in my library. Sorry I am unable to supply an image.
This is my first ever post to a forum so if I left anything out , be kind.

Re: H&R Sportsman Research
L. Nickeson,
Thanks for the info! It is very helpful as your serial number falls into one of the "hole". Would you, please, provide more or all of the serial number? That would really help, even one more digit will be a great aid.
Research, as it stands now - indicates your M199 SA was made after April of1933, but before 1934. Also, am I correct that the firing pin is located in the frame and not on the nose of the hammer?
As to the intermittent ejector problem - most likely just gummed up either inside the hinge ejector parts or inside the cylinder bushing - spray cleaning both may help clear it up.
The ejector mechanism on the M199 is identical to that found on the M999 Double Action of the same period. If you can find a schematic or blown up diagram for the 999, it will show you what you, also, have.Jim Hauff H&R Collector In memory of my friends Bill Goforth and Jim Ritchie.

Re: H&R Sportsman Research
1) Serial number is S178XX stamped on the front of the grip frame. You have a PM with the full serial.
2) Hammer mounted firing pin.
3) Safety rim on the cylinder. No patent dates or "applied for" markings on cylinder.
4) Small push button on left side frame.
5) Address on right side of barrel.
6) SA
7) Adjustable front.

Re: H&R Sportsman Research
Imashooter,
Got it! Recorded info. THANKS,
Your piece is most likely made in late 1937- early 1938 - this one falls into one of the data "holes" and the info is helping fill in. It's probably a 4th Variation. The data for the SA Model 199s is somewhat confusing at the present - but it should become clearer as more info comes in. Thanks again for contributing.Jim Hauff H&R Collector In memory of my friends Bill Goforth and Jim Ritchie.
