Default Need suggestions for a revolver

    Hey guys,

I am in the market for a new revolver and would like first hand suggestions. Here is the rundown of narrowing my search.

    - Double Action preferably

    - At least a 3" barrel but preferably between 4 and 6

    - Affordable yet effective ammo preferably .38/.357

    - Suitable for home defense (i have other firearms but just want that option)

    - Price range pretty wide at $350-$550

had my eye on a gp100 but maybe you guys have something that i didn't even think of...thanks guys

I have a couple of Ruger .357, a snubby and a 5 incher, both are pretty heavy, but in that respect are very sturdy guns. The snubby is my daily carry peice.

I'll second the Ruger revolvers. I bought both my mom and sister a .357 magnum years and years ago for home defense guns, and they are both still in great shape, and look brand new. Both have had several hundred rounds through them in that time.

My all-around favorite is the S&W K Frame. Some of them are chambered in .357 magnum, but I'm not convinced that .357 magnum is worth the added recoil, muzzle flash, and cost of ammo. If you do want to go the .357 route I would go with a heavier gun like the GP-100.

    You want the S&W 686+ 7 shot L frame.

Personally, I love the Ruger SP-101 .357 Magnum with a 3" barrel. Add a set of Hogue grips and you've got a solid little carry gun that will handle magnum ammo as long as you can afford to shoot it.
The GP-100 is also a great gun, but a bit big for carry.
I can't say anything bad about a good Smith and Wesson in .357 either, but I'd prefer Ruger. I would stick with the .357 chambering though - you can always load it down but you can't load a .38 up.

Can't go wrong with a S&W 686. I just picked one with a 6" barrel up (6 shot), and damn... is it ever nice.

Where in the world is he going to get a 686 for $350?

    Get a used GP 100 or a Smith 66 .

Ruger Redhawks are $1000 brand new, but there are a lot of them, used, floating around for $400 to $450. Just a suggestion. These revolvers will last a freaking lifetime.
BCM and Glock...for a bigger pile of 'cold dead hands' brass.

Op a friend of mine had a .357 with a 6 inch barrel for sale. IIRC the price was $300 with some ammo. Last I knew it was still available. Pm me if you are interested. I can hook you two up with Ph #. Cant remember the model!
