Default Stoeger SBS Build Thread (was: how short should I chop it?)

    Just picked her up yesterday!

Stoeger Coach Gun, 20 gauge, used, mint condition, for $199! Thanks, Tanners!

I've always wanted a SxS SBS, like you see in all the movies. Road Warrior, Resident Evil 4, etc. They are just badass!

I'm definitely gonna chop the stock into a pistol grip, but how short should I go on the barrels? I'm thinking I might just cut them off about a quarter inch past the end of the forend. I'm not sure I'm skilled enough to shorten the forend and get a good result, especially with the checkering.

    What do you guys think?

I'm liking as you mentioned, just past the forearm.

Here is one that has a shortened forend:

I think it looks pretty cool, but I don't think I'll go that short.

If your making it a pistol grip, then cut down to the forearm...or shorter! LOL

Here's one that doesn't have a chopped forend (or forearm, whatever you wanna call it):

Be prepared to have to break the gun open over your knee after you chop it. It might not be as easy as it looks in the movie. Most SXS that do not have exposed hammers reset the hammer spring by opening them. When you cut your barrels you loose your leverage.

I would suggest leaving the stock fore end alone, for now. Maybe find an old one and practice your beaver skills on it.
Other than that, this will be awesome. Have FUN!

Thanks! I am aware of the leverage issue, but I'm not too worried about it. This is just gonna be a range toy. Also it seems pretty smooth compared to some of the other SxS shotguns I've handled, and I found some info to make it even smoother:

I've decided to keep the forend the way it is, and see how I like it. I can always cut it shorter down the road if I want to.

Okay guys I just spent the past two hours with an orbital sander shaping the grip. I wet the sanded areas with water for the pictures:

Not done yet, but getting there!
