Is it legal to target shoot in your own backyard?
im sure this novice inquiry has been slammed posted every which way on this forum,,but I really asked a few friends about this who infact shoot Only on their land & say its totally legal!!! now I trust in my friends, but I trust in experts that seem to be sharing their vast spectrum of knowledge in all aspects with legality regarding firearm law specifics, More!!!!!!
I've been target shooting on my friends & familys property for years with no issues from surrounding neighbors....but it would sure be nice to know if this has been an ignorant breaking of the law all this time by me and all my loved ones!!!
Unrelated question?
is it legal with my L.T.C.F. to pack (conceale) 2 firearms.....Mabey, one on my hip, & one on my boot???
I surely coud've looked all the above up (googled it) but i think its valuble to have updated questions like this for all us newbs to have Expert answers too!

Re: Is it legal to target shoot in your own backyard?
That depends on the local laws where you/your friends live. Check local Township/City ordinances. Look here http://www.generalcode.com/webcode2.html#penn
To see if your township has it's ordinances listed online for easy access.
There is no limitation on the amount or method of firearms carried in Pa. You may carry as many as physically possible however possible that you may desire. If you can afford it, you can carry like Neo when entering the office building in The Matrix. Legally.Last edited by ByblosHex; July 31st, 2011 at 08:14 PM.

If you/your friends live in Scranton City it is illegal to discharge firearms within the city.
Firearms (§ 232-1)
[Adopted 9-26-1979 as Sec. 21-22 of the 1979 Code]
Discharge of firearms.
It shall be unlawful for any person to shoot or discharge any firearm within the city, except for law enforcement officers in pursuit of their duties.

Re: Is it legal to target shoot in your own backyard?
In many townships it is not only unlawful to discharge firearms but air pistols and rifles as well. I used to shoot Intl. Air Pistol in college and was actually doing it in my back yard for several years after buying my first house. Was chatting with a police officer who was on a pistol league with me (Yes, I do talk with, and shoot with, LEOs socially) and was surprised to learn that it was against the law in West Goshen. He actually had a binder in his patrol car with all the state and local laws in it and showed me.
How we are supposed to know what is legal and not I have no idea.... I guess was are all guilty of something.

True throughout most of SE PA townships. Why discharging a BB gun on a multi acre property should be illegal is beyond me. Here in Lower Merion it is illegal to even OWN an air gun of any kind, it is legal for LE to confiscate it. Fine is up to 1000$ for possession.

If true that is RIPE for challenge under the UFA Pre-emption doctrine, unless they have wiggle room because the UFA doesnt classify bb guns as firearms.
I would still look into it, if for no other reason then to put the arrogant pricks that enacted such bullshit in their proper placeSi vis pacem, para bellum

Re: Is it legal to target shoot in your own backyard?
I guess if it's shorter than an overall 26 inches, it would be considered a firearm. Since the UFA definition doesn't require it to be a combustion based projectile.
"Firearm." Any pistol or revolver with a barrel length less than 15 inches, any shotgun with a barrel length less than 18 inches or any rifle with a barrel length less than 16 inches, or any pistol, revolver, rifle or shotgun with an overall length of less than 26 inches. The barrel length of a firearm shall be determined by measuring from the muzzle of the barrel to the face of the closed action, bolt or cylinder, whichever is applicable.

Re: Is it legal to target shoot in your own backyard?
Moon,
As many have posted before, it depends on where you live. In the township I live in, it is legal. Just about everyone shoots in their backyard around here. Out of consideration for my neighbours, I take extended shooting to the range. A few shots to test a particular reload - not an issue. Safety is of absolute priority, of course.
What township do you live in? Check that link that was posted above. Maybe it is listed there.
Incidently, my township has no police department. Not saying that should matter - it just shows how remote we are.
