Default 18 US 930 signs taken down from the local post office

    Hey guys

The local Turtle Creek post office used to have signs showing no weapons and the 18 US 930 statute, but now all the signs have been removed as well as any reference to weapons except for the penalty for armed robbery of a postal employee. Has there been some change I missed? Does anyone have information?

My post office never had a sign, just a newspaper type cliping on a bulletin board. You would never see it unless you were looking for it

It's not one slated for closure is it? Maybe they are sending the signs to another Post Office?

I'm not aware of any changes to the PO prohibitions but there is a case out west challenging them.

Without proper signage and failing to be otherwise notified as to the prohibition provides, under 18 USC 930(h), for a defense against conviction on 930 itself (1 year and fine).

However, as far as I know, 39 CFR 232.1(l) remains in force and even without signage you can be convicted of violating it (30 days/$50).

The Post Office is considering putting in more mini post offices inside of commercial retail outlets as they are drawing down on dedicated post offices. I wonder how this will effect our carry rights inside a commercial retail business that contains a post office.

It does sound like the "Village Post Office" would be run by staff of the establishment that they reside in. So its not on federal land or staffed by federal employees and to my understanding that is why carry is prohibited at government post offices.

It was there last time I went in, which was about a month ago. I'll keep an eye out to see if it gets put back up. As far as TC being on the closure list, I doubt it. From what I've heard it more like the satellite branches, like the many in the city of PGH, etc.

I just realized that 930 has an "other lawful purposes" exception.

i use to do alot of work in postal facilities as a outside contractor. we did ada upgrades as well as general remodeling of the facilities. i can tell you if it is a postal facility, even if it is just a space in another business or facility, mall, store, residence ect. this rented space becomes federal property so their rules apply. just ask the local building codes inspectors i have had removed by the marshals for trespass and interference with my work. as far as a firearm in your car in the parking lot, in days gone by this was a no no. i have since heard this might have been changed but am not sure. tread carefully the postal inspectors are not known for their sense of humor.
