It's not bad for the most part, really.
Anyone carrying a weapon should understand that it doesn't magically defend them, or instantly give them the ability to retain it or tell them the right time to deploy it when you are literally pressed up against another person - the wall - or the ground. Knives, Guns, etc - the tool changes but the problem is the same.

I have one beef with the article; it tells you to give them what they want.
Fuck them, they get nothing from me.
While I realize that people all over the world read life hacker, this article is clearly written to the fact that you can not arm yourself for defense in most of the world in everyday life.
If I am in PA, or most of the rest of the US, there would only be three reasons why I would end up in hand to hand combat.
1) I was not paying attention to my surroundings and a criminal got the drop on me
2) I was in a "gun free zone" such as a federal building, or NJ
3) I had run out of ammo before I ran out of attackers
As for knowing hand to hand...
I am Irish.
I am from a lower middle class area of Chicago.
I am a long time reader (and student) of Col. William Fairbairn.
If I ended up in a fight today it would not be my first rodeo

For the most part the article does a great service to the novice by giving sound advice and good tips, however one thing I totally disagree with is the one of the first points in the article where the guy Rob Redenbach, saying that you should "Get Loud and Push Back" as soon as the attacker touches you.. I counter this with the opinion, that if the attacker "TOUCHES YOU" its time to react physically and NOT simply yell and push them.. this could get you hurt or killed depending on the attacker and the circumstances.
Just as we all say, that if there is cause to draw the firearm, then there is cause to shoot the attacker. you do not fire warning shots and you never just point the weapon at them unless you actually have made the decision to shoot.
The same thing applies here, the article is correct that you need to be aware, and your best avenue is to avoid the confrontation altogether if possible, but if you are already at the point where the attacker has gotten close enough to touch you, then you need to react and do so with a determined mind and swift decisive action to stop the attack...!!
If you simple yell and push, chances are you will get hurt really badly...!!- Certified Glock Armorer, Μολὼν λαβέ

Index trigger finger along holster side; depress upon draw; lean into the weapon as it comes to bear; acquire front sight; sweep off safety with right thumb; squeeze through the shot. Repeat LAST step as many times as necessary.
If using OTHER than a 1911, YMMV.

That first picture of the woman grabbing the man's nose looks like it came from the Three Stooges Book on Self Defense. I wonder if it works better if you say "nyuck, nyuck, nyuck".
