My 2 cents: I've hunted deer in PA with just about everything, and just about anything will work well. If you already have an 870, why not pick up a rifled barrel for it. Down here in Chester County, we are restricted to shotguns only. My Mossberg gets a 6 inch group at 200 yds with the copper solids. And it should do you well in the 'thick stuff'.

That being said, if you are going to be in the more open, then you can't go wrong with any of the .300's, be it a .30-06, .308, or any of the .300 mags.

Go to your local range, talk with some of the others. Maybe they will take you under their wing, so to speak.

Whatever you decide to use.... PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

    Hey Alex,

We can also talk about this when the lowers come in and we do the transfer. I hunt just outside the Scotia range and I use a 44 Magnum in a Ruger bolt action carbine (77/44) and it does everything I need it to do for deer. I grew up using a 30-30. For me it would be a tough decision between a 270 and a 30-06 both are very good calibers. If you are going to do more hunting down the road in other places (out west, etc) I would go with either one as both are very adaptable for a large range of hunting. In fact my "Western" gun is a Sako 75 in .280 Remington, and I sometimes carry my TC Contender (single shot) deer hunting and it is a 7-30 Waters (30-30 necked to 7mm). If you want opinions, when we have our AR get together you will definitely get opinions as you well know.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm sure I'll definitely have questions for the get-together.

also pump rifles, break open like t/c encores, lever marlin is stronger than win, bolt action I like CZ, and hand guns single shot and revolver and shoot guns bow and crossbows are are aloud but check your areas.

I recommend looking at standard well stocked calibers when selecting a hunting gun a firearms is only a platform for the bullet, i like the term sophisticated rock chucker's. Also anything larger than 308win is in my opinion a waste unless its huge game like hippos.

Good thread, I bought my first rifle just after Christmas, Marlin 336XLR 30-30. I am a complete noob to hunting as well.

My wife's father is going to show me the ropes, he has hunted all of his life and my freezer always has deer meat in it he had shot. I'm taking the hunter safety course in March at SCCSC in Kennet Square.

    Good luck,
    Bill
