New to the Glock family
I bought my 1st Glock 19 this weekend and took it to the range this morning. LOVED IT!! 100 rounds of Winchester white box and 15 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense right out of the box- no hiccups! Love the trigger pull and the accuracy in which i shot it for a 1st time Glock user. It feels really nice in the hand and the magazines are quality too. Im making this my new EDC for the time being. My question to the more experienced "glock heads" is when or how often should i clean my glock?

Re: New to the Glock family
I clean my guns after every trip to the range, with one exception:
Even if I'm not primarily shooting my carry gun (either a G27 or G30) on a particular range trip, it gets one magazine through it, just so I know that what I'm carrying goes bang. I won't clean it on each range trip (with only having put one mag through it), but I'll clean it every two or three weeks, regardless.
Glocks are easy to clean, so IMO, you can't overdo it."I don't care what went wrong. I beat the snot out of it until it works" - Clint Smith

Re: New to the Glock family
If I shoot a gun at the range it gets cleaned as soon as I get home. Otherwise I clean them once a month, even if that just means blowing out all the dust and lint with computer duster.

Re: New to the Glock family
When I got my 19 I purposely decided NOT to clean it until it started to have hic cups. After about 1100 rounds I broke down and cleaned it anyway. I was using the cheapest ammo I could find as well as the good stuff and never had a single problem. Keep in mind though if you bought it new and it has a gold colored grease on the rails Glock recommends that you do not clean it off. Shoot it until it disappears by getting worked into the gun. Enjoy.

Guns run as long as they are lubed up, dirty or not.

Re: New to the Glock family
The posters really make very good points. Cleaning your gun after ever visit is honestly overkill. In the honeymoon phase I used to clean them after every trip but now I do it every other. I tried to make a compromise between reality and my swooning over the "girls". Im going to start cleaning after every 3rd trip soon but its hard to break the habit. (I still lube them when necessary though)
I couldnt imagine if guns were that finicky (sp?), it would be absolutely horrible if they were......
EDIT: Like Asmodeus6 said if the gun was carried I would cleaning after every range trip, I dont carry (yet) so my comment was based on my usage.Last edited by beast1989; July 13th, 2011 at 02:25 PM.

Re: New to the Glock family
I normally clean carry weapons after they get shot because they may be used in defense of my life. I don't want to find out at what round count handgun A: decides to take a shit in the middle of me shooting back at someone that's trying to kill me.
Worse yet, that's just me dying. What if people I care about are with me. Do I want to stake anyone else's life on the reliability of a dirty gun?
Firing a mag or two through the gun is not enough to spur me into cleaning it however and I'll often do that and not clean it. IF, it doesn't stink. IF, it smells like fired gun, I have a tendency to clean it. Or at least wipe it down and lube it a little.
In the end it's up to you. That gun is a particularly reliable one if everything is "normal" with it. I'm sure it could go thousands of rounds without cleaning OR lube. I wouldn't push my luck however if you are going to use it for carry.
As always - this is just my opinion, and my own logic. Yours may vary.
