Guests on probation?
OK here is the run down. My niece's loved one is on probation they both really want to attend family functions this weekend. Now myself my brother inlaw and my other brother inlaw all own guns. And WE would really would like to see them around for the holidays. We are a very tight nit family. So what we as a family are trying to figure out is. What can we as gun owners do so that they may attend the family get together and no probation laws are broken? Now as a side note they do know that the loved one can not be around weapons. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Guests on probation?
I had a Housemate (didn't share the same room) in college that was on probation, and had the same concerns that you have expressed. I called the probation department, found out who his Probation Officer was and told him my concerns about not getting my buddy in trouble. He told me that as long as we didn't share a room and they were stored in MY space that it was not an issue.
That being said, I do NOT know what the actual law is regarding this as I was content to take the word of the guy that would have been coming to put the cuffs on my buddy.
IANAL.will that extra 15% matter? not as much as being able to put one in their face. ~Edg

Re: Guests on probation?
If they are unable to access the guns, they are okay. This can be anything from a gun safe to running a cable lock through all of the trigger guards and keeping the key in your own pocket. Or lock them in your car trunk.
In other words, take reasonable precautions, which show that you have actively denied possession or use.

Just lock up the guns in a cabinet or safe. If you lack either, put them in one room and lock it. As long as he doesn't have control or custody of the gun he should not get in trouble. You have no legal worries, only the person on probation has legal worries.

Re: Guests on probation?
I was pretty sure that was the case but just wanted to make sure. Now one other thing if I or someone else is c/c or o/c at the time of visit. Do we need to disarm and lock up those firearms as well?

Re: Guests on probation?
Unless the persons probation officer is also attending this get together, I wouldn't worry about it.

Keep your safe locked and the keys ON you - you'll be fine.
