Trip to Maine
Will be heading to Maine with the family this month and plan on bringing a pistol for self defense. We will be driving from PA so we'll be crossing through NY state. I've been told by a former NYC LEO that anything outside of NYC should be fine. Anyone else ever made a trip through NY have any advice? Good route from the Allentown area, etc? Anyone have any other feedback on carrying in Maine?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Trip to Maine
Do your homework on transporting through NYS. You have FOPA protection but it has to be stored accordingly. Also some will argue if FOPA allows you to transport illegal high capacity mags through a state with capacity limits. Do your research before heading out. Avoid NYC at all costs.
Check out the NRA-ILA for information on carrying in Maine. In America arms are free merchandise such that anyone who has the capital may make their houses into armories and their gardens into parks of artillery. - Ira Allen, 1796

Re: Trip to Maine
Where in Maine you heading? I head up to Bingham Maine once a year, but I'm up by I-84 already. In your case, I would head up 33 to 209 to I-84, very scenic. Gas up in Pa. and don't stop to ya get to Maine. Have fun, stay safe.

Re: Trip to Maine
I just made the trip a few weeks ago. I went up 84 as to avoid NYC. Also made sure to fill up before hitting the NY state line. Stored the pistol according to FOPA until I hit NH. We can carry there according to their website. Have fun and safe travels. The Mosquitos were pretty bad when I was there. Apparently it was due it being so rainy this year. Hope they have died down.

Thanks to everyone for the information. It looks like I have a route. We are going to be heading to Embden, which is well off the coast. Will be nice to hang out at a lake for awhile!

Re: Trip to Maine
I know a guy who took 95 to Bristol to PA turnpike, to NJ Turnpike, Over GW bridge in NYC and then into CT (sammich and a beer in Hartford), MA and NH on their way to Maine, (lobster roll and beer in Portland on way to Bar Harbor). And lived to tell about it. Left the Hornady Critical Duty at home, although they are apparently on the NJ OK list, but that's another issue.
Read the FOPA law. Good luck. Enjoy Maine.
