Legal as long as you don't enter the facilities where people get booked or held.

Something like that. Someone will be along to post the specific.

Stay in the PUBLIC, non-secured areas

I take it you are renewing a still valid LTCF? or you intend to not
    Conceal nor enter a vehicle?

(dead horse) you don't need to pick up or fill out any police check card (/dead horse)

I believe this is the statute that might apply:

§ 5122. Weapons or implements for escape
    (a) Offenses defined.--
    (1) A person commits a misdemeanor of the first degree if he unlawfully introduces within a detention facility, correctional institution or mental hospital, or unlawfully provides an inmate thereof with any weapon, tool, implement, or other thing which may be used for escape.
    (2) An inmate commits a misdemeanor of the first degree if he unlawfully procures, makes or otherwise provides himself with, or unlawfully has in his possession or under his control, any weapon, tool, implement or other thing which may be used for escape.

    (b) Definitions.--

    (1) As used in this section, the word "unlawfully" means surreptitiously or contrary to law, regulation or order of the detaining authority.
    (2) As used in this section, the word "weapon" means any implement readily capable of lethal use and shall include any firearm, ammunition, knife, dagger, razor, other cutting or stabbing implement or club, including any item which has been modified or adopted so that it can be used as a firearm, ammunition, knife, dagger, razor, other cutting or stabbing implement, or club. The word "firearm" includes an unloaded firearm and the unassembled components of a firearm.

    1972, Dec. 6, P.L. 1482, No. 334, § 1, effective June 6, 1973. As amended 1974, Dec. 10, P.L. 910, No. 300, § 2, imd. effective; 1999, Dec. 15, P.L. 915, No. 59, § 3, effective in 60 days.
I'm not sure where "detention facility" and "correctional institution" are defined though.

Yes, you can OC or CC into a police station as long as you don't enter the holding area.

What is this check card you speak of?

Are these check cards for getting a license? Is that legal?

The Local Police check card must be signed by your local Police Department. This applies to new applicants only. The Local Police check card is only valid for 60 days from date of signature by Police Department.
Is it legal? Since when did that stop them from doing whatever they want?

Besides, I'm sure there's "no apparent criminal intent".

    Incorrect

They ask you to do it, it is not required

    Just say no

The duty of the background investigation is on the Sheriff not the applicant.
Why are you doing his job for him?

Can PD's prohibit the carry of firearms in the station, or would that be a preemption violation?

ETA: Assuming they can't prohibit the carry of firearms in the non-secured area (front lobby), can they prohibit the carry of firearms in the secured area? Lets suppose you have to enter the secured area of the police station for the purpose of servicing something inside their building, can you CC?

In the couple of PDs that I have visited...all through the front door by the way ...the LEO don't even carry into the detention/booking areas. They have lockers just outside that section that they lock their own guns in before proceeding. Not sure what they do when entering thru the back door directly into the booking area.
