Make a firearms safety & education packet for your friends.
I am taking two female friends of mine to the range, for their first time ever, on Monday. They have never even handled a firearm before so I put together this packet for each of them and plan on using it to do a 60 minute training/education/safety session with them before we get there.
Picture 1. Revolver & Autopistol comparison on one side, anatomy of a modern cartridge on the other.
Picture 2. PA LTCF (Delco) application added.
Picture 3. Your Pennsylvania Gun Rights and a nice folder from the PSP which explains alot of good information not on the Gun Rights folder and has safety information as well.Last edited by dragonofpa; January 5th, 2008 at 08:43 PM.

I almost think that the 1st diagram info is more over the top for a first time shooter. I doubt they really need that much info on firearms the first time they go out. Perhaps if they decide they are interested and want to continue to educate themselves, but I try not to overdo it with new people, if they think they need to know tons before they even pick up a firearm they will be turned off by it. Just my 2c.

Yeah, I have made several similar packets for people who express interest. Usually contain things like firearms statistics and false myths that get spouted from the anti's like "Most people end up getting shot with their own gun" kinda thing and show some stats on people who have used a firearm to save their lives or just drew the firearm and never even had to pull the trigger. Nice idea and perhaps you will win open some eyes with it.

Good stuff.
I usually just do the four rules and some dry fire with snap caps to allow newbies to handle guns safely before a range trip. The biggest problem most people seem to have is trigger finger discipline. I've never had anyone involved in any kind of ND but I keep a close eye on trigger finger discipline (muzzle discipline is so totally non-negotiable it's never been an issue) and can be even a bit of a dick about it, but it keeps it safe.
Two most important instructions: STOP. JUST PUT THE GUN DOWN AND I WILL SHOW YOU. I can't remember how many times this has been the easiest way to teach anyone how to deal with just about anything.

Great idea! I have a couple people in my life that are close to being converted. I may have to come up with something similar for them. I would definitely start with the 4 rules in big bold letters right off the bat, though.
Perhaps there is another sticky in the making here, it would be dandy to be able to print out a few sheets designed to assist and inform someone new to firearms.
Where did you get the State Police flier?
