Proposed sniper range raises concerns in South Beaver Township
Thought this would be more appropriate for the Beaver County area.
Interesting read.

Re: Proposed sniper range raises concerns in South Beaver Township
If I owned all that property, I would love to have a large shooting range on it too.
As much as I love guns, I probably wouldn't want to hear it all day long if I lived that close to one either.
Really a tough call.
Maybe the shooting range owner can get a grant from the township to put up sound baffles where the people shoot at."One must be a fox to recognize traps, and a lion to frighten wolves” ~ Machiavelli

Re: Proposed sniper range raises concerns in South Beaver Township
It is a tough one. From what I read they already had a private range so it seems like less of a sound issue and more of a safety thing. Without knowing how the houses are laid out I can't really comment. They do mention a backstop and other safety measures though.
I would either get sick of the sound or used to it. Not sure how much sound baffles would help if someone starts shooting a Barret M107!

Re: Proposed sniper range raises concerns in South Beaver Township
I'm all for:
1. New shooting ranges
2. Property rights
but, they are asking for a zoning change that would worry me if I was their neighbor. Of course, I'd be less thrilled with the strip mining operation (which apparently didn't bother the neighbors ?!) than a well constructed range. Heck, I'm less than a mile from thousands of acres of heavily-hunted State Game Lands and State Forest.

Re: Proposed sniper range raises concerns in South Beaver Township
Reading to the end of the article, what is currently being contested is the re-zoning that the land owners asked for, which they require in order to change the range from a private range to a commercial facility. If they don't get a re-zoning, they can't charge for it's use.

Re: Proposed sniper range raises concerns in South Beaver Township
If I understood the article correctly, the range is oriented such that shots fired are toward the homes mentioned, which are on the back side of a substantial berm. While that puts the houses 1,000+ yards from the muzzle blasts, might it stretch rule four somewhat (Be sure of your target ... and what is beyond)? Can't say for sure without seeing the setup.
I'm all for new shooting ranges, but it does seem like the zoning question should have been decided before major improvements were made. Based on the limited info provided in the article, I think I'd tend to side with the homeowners.Cogito, ergo armatus sum.
