Default Cabela's SKS on sale. Good First SKS??

I was wondering if someone could give me a little advice on an SKS?
I am looking at purchasing my first SKS and saw in the Cabela's sale flyer they have one for 299.99. Regular price is 399.99. The add don't say much and I couldn't find it on their site but it does says includes accessories.
Would anyone know if this would be a good SKS to purchase?
Any thing I should be leery of or on the lookout for?
I will admit I have very very little knowledge of the SKS rifles.
Thanks for any information you can give.

    .

Just checked their flyer, looks like a standard Yugo 59/66 which apparently has gone up in price while I wasn't looking. AIM surplus is selling them for $379 so for a sale price it seems to be in the ballpark assuming they are in equally nice shape.

Do you want an SKS... or a Yugo SKS? The feel and look of the Yugo is a bit different than other SKS rifles. I personally like the Russians or even Chinese better (JMO). So you might want to shop around before you make an impulse buy on this- especially if you aren't that familiar with the rifles.

They aren't everywhere, but you could buy a Russian for mid 300s if you are patient.

This. I've bought them on other forums for $225-$250 fairly consistently. I wouldn't buy one from Cabelas---if you're patient I'd wager you could find one in great shape from a private individual for roughly $250-$300 at most.

I agree with the other posters: the Yugo is a good SKS but after tax and pics you'll be around $325 from Cabelas and you can find them for $250 pretty regularly. Plus I'd bet those at Cabelas will be in the same condition as everyone else's.

I just picked up a Yugo SKS 59/66 off the forum's classifieds. Great condition, and I would rather give someone local my money instead of Mr.Big Box Corp!
I personally like the Yugo, but to each his own. Does the one at Cabelas come with the bayonet, rifle grenade launcher, and ladder sight? Mine did, and I only paid $300.

I have heard though that sometimes the Yugos will be mix and matched serials. don't know how much truth there is to that though. Good luck in your purchase!

Just a side note the Yugo's don’t have chrome lined barrels like most of the other countries that are or have been producing them.

Are you sure about that? I agree that Yugo SKS's produced before 1970 did not have chrome lined barrels, but I thought SOME did after that year?
