Default now that i have a child...

Ok so I was having a discussion the other night about in home gun storeage so it is ready and yet out of kids reach.

I was thinking pop open five finger combo safe with alternate key access.

Or shot gun with trigger lock and shells hidden.

I have one of those GunVaults with the finger combo...the two tiered one.

    I keep all the long-guns in a stack-on cab.

I also have lockable ammo cans....sorta like this one:

I use something similar to the gun vault shown above for my HD hand gun. The shotgun I keep in the closet with shells in the tube but none in the chamber. Someone makes a similar vault called the Shot Lock I think but it seems a bit pricey for me. Been playing with ideas on how to make my own version.

I've have a little lockbox for my guns that I don't use now for guns; I keep jewelry and money in it. I only bought it because my b/f was prohibited by a PFA, so by law, he couldn't have access to them. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered. I grew up with guns in the home, as did my older sister and brother, and my dad never felt the need to have one. Most of the men in our family had guns, and the most they ever had were the typical rifle cabinets you see in most homes in PA, full of hunting rifles.

I think educating your kids about guns is more important than just locking them up. We all knew where dad's Colt was, we knew it could kill, and we never touched or went near it without his permission. Also, if you do decide to buy a safe, you don't really need one until your kid is strong enough to drag a chair to the closet.

LOL. I should hide mine under my b/f's pile of underwear.

Mine are all 10 and under - Stack-On cabinets work well for me... for the time being. That, and I have ALL the keys.

Right now have a new born. I completley agree education is key that is why I have Eddie the eagle literature and participate at NRA functions.

The idea I am trying to balance is ease of access for me for home defense while being secure away from my growing child.

I have a safe. But a safe when a gun is needed is not ideal.
