Default Things to do in Scranton.

I'll be up in Scranton next week taking my girl to a doctors appointment. We're planning on making a day of it. What is there to see and do in Scranton this time of the year? A few things to note:

-We're both poor. Times haven't been too great for either of us as of late. Cheap is neccessary, free is preferred.
-We're both very physically fit. Although she is seeing a doctor about a hand injury and I have a strained quad. That leaves rock climbing out but we can do just about anything else.
-We'll be taking her younger brother whom is autistic. He's a very high functioning autistic though. He's like a teenager without a sense of self preservation and a very short attention span. Needless to say this rules out things that are possibly boring or dangerous. That includes shooting sadly.

Thanks for reading and for any suggestions.

There is Steamtown. It is a train museum. Not sure of the cost.

There are two parks you can go to, Nay Aug Park, and McDade Park. McDade isn't really in Scranton, it's in Taylor, on the border of Scranton. Both are very nice to walk around. Lake Scranton is also pretty, and is a nice long walk, as long as you do it in the early afternoon. If you're going to go to a mall, avoid the Steamtown Mall; it attracts all the ghetto trash from around the city, because the welfare office is right next to it.. The Viewmont Mall is cleaner, and nicer. Like Normanvin said, the Steamtown historic site is kind of cool, and it's down the block from the Steamtown Mall. They've got a trolley museum, and the train runs from Scranton to Moscow, and is great on a nice day. The Everhart Museum is right in Nay Aug Park, by the way.

You could always take the Coal mine tour. . . . It is like $10 per person. Not free but not very expensive either and really cool. If you do it bring a jacket it gets a little chilly down there, it is 53 deg all year round.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. Thus far the parks and lake Scranton look about right for us but I'd still be open to other suggestions. The ghetto trash sounds amusing as well. People watching can be fun.

Scranton is a pretty boring town. It's mostly bars and churches, really. We pretty much listed everything within your parameters. If you were coming to drink, I could be more help.

Why Scranton for a hand injury when you have OAA right there outside Allentown?

I'm sorry. I can't say why the doctor she needs to see is in Scranton. Matters with insurance haven't been settled.

Bars and restaurants would be good to know. I don't drink but she does. We're both poor so dive/cheap bars are preferred. Her brother is over 21 so that won't be an issue.

Restaurants may prove to be tricky. We're both vegetarians.

Once again, thanks for your help everyone.

Not up there but have you had any deserts from Vegan Treats in Bethlehem?

If you're vegetarian, eating in Scranton is a cinch. Go to Eden, in downtown Scranton, on Adams Street, between Mulberry and Linden. Best tofurkey rolls ever. It's not cheap, though. Subway is across from the courthouse, though, and they have veggie sandwiches.
