Try a sonic cleaner, works great with Glocks.
My brother in law puts his disassembled 1911's and two Ruger revolvers in his dish washer. I think he uses Cascade. True story.

    Hahaha!

I'm more of a casual gun cleaner, but it depends on the gun and what it's used for. If I'm out shooting on a hot day and sweating on a blued gun you better believe I'm more concerned about giving it a good wipe down and a coat of oil than I am about the internals being soiled from shooting a few rounds.

Carry guns are different. Keep them clean, properly lubed, but don't go crazy. If it's clean and lubed you don't need to clean it again.

I am amazed and a little bit scared at the "clean? what's that?" crowd.

Yep, I know it seems unnecessary. You know what else often seems unnecessary? Checking to see if a gun is loaded when you know it isn't.

Just sayin'. Y'all can do what you want with your guns, but a lot of the habits we've been taught by our grandfathers were put in place for a reason.

an occasional clean is good.. but don't be to anal about it.. especially the oil.. oil can be your worst enemy if used to heavily.

I have to say, this topic has been tremendously fulfilling. I knew different people had different ways of doing things, but I was surprised over and over again by some of the responses in this topic. I didn't think many of them were even possible, but apparently, I'm not always right.

    Thanks for the responses, everyone!

Not to mention touching it without giving yourself greasy fingers is nigh impossible.

FYI here's the CLP in Break-Free Cleaner, Lubricant, Preservative

But all kidding aside. I've seen too many good guns ruined by over-zealous and improper cleaning (your Drill Sgt isn't always right!). There are huge differences between cleaning for storage or cleaning guns that are fired a lot and cleaning guns carried in the field and subject to dust, mud, rain etc. Use a little common sense.

If I put a gun in my dishwasher she'd hit me.
