    Default Any Ideas?

Found this in my grandfathers basement workshop. He passed away a year or two ago and left lots behind down there.

Not sure what it is, or really what to do with it.

It has a live 38 special casing I'm assuming for primer purposes, so I take it that this is a live cartridge.

Phone pictures, so my apologies for the low quality.

Says 1 pounder on it which is a 37mm gun. Could be AA, antitank or an old British Pom Pom gun ammo.

I couldn't even begin to tell you what to do with it.

LOL! Yes that would be bad! Maybe try getting in touch with some ammo/ordnance collectors maybe able to give you a better handle on if its indeed a live rd. or has any collector value

After some Googling, you seem to be exactly right. It's a U.S. 1 Pound HE (TNT) cartridge. Anchor symbol for naval use.

Found this link with pictures, saw a couple of pictures with a large hole in the base, hopefully someone just stuck a .38 with the primer to make it look real.

There are casing measurements, take a look at the 2nd picture for 37mm, labeled 1.457 inch sub cal.

    Also found this page:

If the case is 137mm....it is US Navy most likely.

Spot on, looks just like it. Need some more info on WMFG Co. !

I really hope so too, but the way it's almost sealed in there makes me think otherwise. Definitely hear powder inside the casing as well. Well, I suppose I'll leave it sit down there. I certainly don't want to get tangled into some kind of mess.

WMFG Co was an American manufacturer. WMFG might be Winchester ManuFacturinG Company.

It looks to be 37mm(3.7cm) Hotchkiss shell.

If the projectile has an explosive charge - it could be a Destructive Device. However, that shell looks to have a solid steel point which is the Armor Piercing version. To be sure, look about an inch down from the tip of the projectile for a very faint line. If there isn't a line, its a solid AP round. If there is a line, it possibly has a charge - which could possible be the DD mentioned above.
