Re: Too important to kee my mouth shut anymore Part I
Training need not be expensive or time consuming. That for too long has been the excuse of law enforcement. Everyone who has been to training has attended a two day class that could have been effectively covered in one day. I seldom do more than a two day course, and during that two days I usually cover 2-3 subjects that compliment each other like open hand combatives, edged weapons, and combat pistol. It all comes down to intensity. Their is one drill I do that takes about two seconds to complete but covers-
Making physical contact with an attacker in response to furtive movement
Striking the attack
Drawing their pistol from concealment
Shooting one handed while moving off the X to the flank of the attacker
I did not say that all classes were worthless, a close friend of mine stated my very point last week " I am too old to spend a weekend and $600 making a pile of once fired brass, killing cardboard, and learning someone elses spin on executing a reload".
If you are attending a class and shooting 1000 rounds you are there for the round count, not making rounds count.
I will be doing a bunch of courses in Whitemarsh, and some on the weekends too besides weeknight classes. Hopefully you will be able to squeeze one in.- George

Re: Too important to kee my mouth shut anymore Part I
When i wanted to learn to fight and defend myself against all comers, i joined the US Army Infantry.
Mission accomplished. There is not much i fear any more, nor that i have feared in a very long time, even despite facing some absolutely crazy situations in my 15 years working the absolute worst ghettos of Philly. When the SHTF, you have to act fast and be mean. Merciless even. Disbelief that "this can't be happening to me" is your mortal enemy.
I am in no way a self defense expert, but i have certainly been tested in multiple real life situations, and i am still here.Last edited by Valorius; May 28th, 2011 at 05:17 PM.

Re: Too important to kee my mouth shut anymore Part I
I guess it must have been then. Were you in the Infantry?
You would be hard pressed to find a fighting organization that has more real world fighting experience than the US Army, and we don't lose very many fights.
We were trained to face the Soviet Union in an all out war while hugely out numbered, hand to hand if need be. So i just can't bring myself to fear some punks in North Philly.
Truth be told, i don't fear anything that breathes the same air as me.Last edited by Valorius; May 28th, 2011 at 05:21 PM.

Re: Too important to kee my mouth shut anymore Part I
IMHO George makes some good points, but for the most part that post just reeks of self promotion and "Ive got the one true path over here ! " BS.
Ive taken a course from George, Ive also taken courses from Vicker, Cain, Hackathorn, Defoor, and others.
Ive done edged weapons, H2H, FoF, basic tactice, carbine, handgun, ect ect ect
Ive been in a number of armed robberies, Ive been in muggings, and more than a handful of fist fights.
Ive also spent a tiny amount of time on MA's in my life.
Theres is good reason that guys with lots of gun fighting experience (re: Vickers, Defoor) push extremely high accuracy standards and guys who know what its like to be hands on and in a shooting and been teaching for decades (re:Cain) will tell you again and again that you can expect group size to double in a fight and that pistols are notoriusly poor man stoppers and that ONLY ACCURATE HITS count.
So......
On the one hand sure you can take a billion high quality firearms courses from reputable instructors and never have anyone lay a hand on you. But on the other hand if you cant hit the target on a square range in broad daylight from a comfortable stance with only a timmer as stress than what the holy fuck are you doing practicing one handed shots from compromised positions ????
IMO this puzzle doesnt have just one important part, it has several. And as Orive has pointed out those several take time and effort.Last edited by Shawn.L; May 28th, 2011 at 10:09 PM.

Well, I guess you got me. This is a firearms forum and I am a firearms instructor and wrote about firearms training and why I do what I do vs what othes do. Guilty as charged. I knew someone would eventually figure me out.
Valorious- they taught you about using deadly force as an armed citizen? My training must be substandard, I do fear many a breathing thing, that is what keeps me training to conquer it.

Re: Too important to kee my mouth shut anymore Part I
reality based training instead of killing cardboard with 1000 rounds in a weekend
George....I think you make some interesting points. No flames here. I agree 100% about low light. I sometimes shoot at dusk/dark. I need to start to do more shooting while moving. Keep posting.Last edited by reverserboy; May 28th, 2011 at 06:33 PM.

That's a weak cop-out.
You're attempting to suggest that everyone else has their priorities jacked-up, and you alone hold the key to streamlined effective fighting solutions. That's why it smells like self-promotion.
As has been said before, guys who know fists like to use fists, guys who know guns like to use guns...
What were some of the recent training investments you've made in your shooting abilities? Being that you consider yourself a "firearms instructor", these skills must be very important to you.
Being that you don't like shot-timers, how are your tracking your performance with the gun?

Re: Too important to kee my mouth shut anymore Part I
This.
There are a lot of regular folks every month in American Rifleman's "Armed Citizen" column that defend themselves with complete effectiveness even despite limited to no training at all.
This is not to say training is not important, obviously it is, but this concept of needing high speed low drag ninja training for every ordinary joe to have any chance to reasonably defend himself is BS IMO. Total BS.
I've dealt with the kinds of scumbag North and West Philly career criminals that we all theorize about facing on these sorts of forums for years. On their turf, alone, with no badge and no backup. They are absolutely capable of extreme violence, but guess what, they have far less training or practice than probably anyone on this forum.
What they have is the will to act without hesitation, and the ability to be mean and ruthless. But they are not some mystical badasses that are going to be able to magically shoot straight because they're gangsta.
The most dangerous opponent any of us is likely to face is some sort of ex military type gone to a life of violent crime, or who just went off, and who has military small arms and small unit tactical training.
Someone like me.
An instructor at gunsite is not going to go nuts and attack one of us. The OP of this thread is not going to attack us.
Since I already have training comparable to my most dangerous potential attacker, i think i'm be as prepared as anyone else who has not devoted their entire life to mano a mano combat.
Like i said, i've faced some crazy situations in my life, and i am still here.
