PENN TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Police said a hunter accidentally shot and killed himself in Penn Township.
The 51-year-old turkey hunter was found off Lux Road early Monday morning. The coroner identified the victim as Richard J. Simms of Irwin.
Simms accidentally shot himself in the shoulder with a shotgun, police told Channel 11 News reporter Cara Sapida.
Police said the man appears to have been trying to climb down from a tree stand when the accident happened.
Other hunters nearby heard the shot, police said, and called 911.
Westmoreland County detectives are investigating.

Do hunters normally call the police when they hear a gun shot in the woods?

Ive only hunted from ladder stands, and make sure to un-chamber and lower the rifle down on a roap if I cant sling it and get down.

Dot forget to check to make sure there are no bore obstructions when doing that as well.
