Newbie to handguns and PAFOA boards
Hi!
With agreement from the CEO of the house (wife), I am finally purchasing a handgun, mainly for in home defense but also for range use. After many hours of internet research, I have decided on the Springfield XD .40 4". I held the 3" at the store which felt good, but wanted the 4" for accuracy and control.
I found these boards after deciding, learning I broke a dozen rules in choosing a gun, but reviews are great and it felt good in my hand. After that its up to me and my learning curve to get good with it.
Anyway, I've been reading up while I wait and look forward to asking lots of "stupid" questions.
Thanks!

I don't know what rules you broke, but having a pistol fit well in your hand is pretty much the first step. A good dealer will have you try several different ones to find one that fits well in your hand first.
After that, it's all about practice and proper training.

Just a word of caution, if you're gonna be on any gun forum, have a thick skin, and try not to take anything too personally. You'll stay will be a lot happier.
Rules are written in the stone,
Break the rules and you get no bones,
all you get is ridicule, laughter,
and a trip to the house of pain.

Re: Newbie to handguns and PAFOA boards
Well... I had my mind made up before even touching one, have only ever fired a shotgun and my Dad's Revolver. Buying from a place with a mediocre reputation although my experience has been descent so far....basically winged it, but still think I made a good choice.
On the up side, I've made good use of youtube.com and watched many videos on safety, grip, stance and field stripping and cleaning as well as the XD torture test and some good videos on what not to do.
When I pick up the XD, I plan on having them give me a run down and field strip it there so I'm not alone the first time through.

Welcome to the sight. Hope you like your XD as much as I like mine. If you don't have your LTCF get it ASAP.
