Default no idea about long range scopes!!!

i just purchased a new savage model 12 FV in 22-250. wondering on what kind of max range i can get? and what would be a good scope for under $500? Was looking at the mueller target dot 8-32x44 or a SS 20x42 which is the best one?

22-250's are sweet. I had one made out of an old Argintine Mauser action. It's a quick round, but it bleeds engergy fast...the curve really drops out at around 250-300m. Depending on application, i'd look for a variable power. Under 500? Prolly a Leupold 3.5-10X40mm.

What are you going to use the rifle for? If target or varmint - stay away from mil-dot type scopes. Those dots are for human-deer sized targets.

Leupold, Zeiss, and a few others made some good scopes. Stay away from fly-by-night manufacturers that have been in the optics business for less than 30 years.

The 22-250 can put rounds out quite a ways, but the bullet itself will determine accuracy at that range. You can lob a .223Rem bullet a couple miles, but there is no guarantee that you will hit what you were wanting to put a hole in.

thanks for the info the SS does have mildots but i was not planning on useing thr mildots for ranging. i wanna use the turret system to the fullest. from what i have been researching the 22-250 with a good load is able to reach out to as far as 750yds. Do i plan on shooting that far propably not, but at least 600yds. is the mueller target dot any good i have heard more good about it than bad

I have an Apex Tactical. I did a review here some time ago. It is a little more than $500 but it has worked great for me.

Trust me you don't want a fixed 20x scope unless you're only target shooting. I have a fixed 10x40 Mark 4 Leupold and anything inside 100 yards can be a task to track.

Wish I would have seen those a month ago. How is it holding up for you? What are you using it on?

    JB70,

Have it on a Savage 10PC in .223 and is holding up real well. Have their newest, which is a Gen 5. Glass is great for the price. No issues so far.
