Default Stick w/the Being Serviced S&W 686, or Trade?

My "bad out-of-the-box" 686 is at the dealer where I purchased it. If not a quick fix, he'll be sending it to S&W. Details are here:

    http://forum.pafoa.org/pistols-41/13...le-action.html

Assuming it comes back to me working, how would you feel about depending on it? Typically, I'll put at least 300-400 rounds through a gun before considering it to be a gun I'd depend on. In this case though, with the nature of the failure, and it failing so early in it's life, am I wrong to feel queasy about ever really being able to trust it?

I'm feeling like I should consider a GP100, and trade/sell the Smith as soon as I get it back.

    Although a GP100 is a solid gun.
Ruger DA triggers, well suck, IMO.

Work it out with the dealer whether it's a clean trade for a new Smith or the current repaired one.

If the dumb thing gets fixed I'd stick with it. Do you like the gun? (when it works?)

Why would you want to sell the 686? If its fixed, its fixed.

I agree S&W has a good product and fine service department. After sending it through your reliability drill then ask that question. My money is on 686 I own one its a old model and I've never had a problem out of it even after shooting 100s of rounds out of it. All full powered 357 magnum the 686 is one of the better revolvers out there when its fixed and working fine.

If it was my gun, after it was fixed I'd dry fire the bejesus out of it and I'd put at least 300 rounds of 38spl and .357 through it. If it's flawless, I'd keep it.

I'll bet it isn't a tough fix so I'd be OK with depending on it to do whatever job that you bought it for.

    This.

Test it to your liking, if it's properly fixed or replaced it should run like a top. Smith wheel guns in good working order shouldn't give you any issues. If it's fixed/replaced you should be good to go for a long time.

I say keep it, a 686 is hard to beat.

"Dumb thing" Yes, it's a great gun. Based on the comments here, I'll probably keep it if it proves reliable after the fix.

Guilty as charged. I am admittedly more than a bit anal. You're right though. Fixed should be fixed.

Thanks. Good advice. I'll do exactly that. Dry fire it like a madman, and see how it performs after several hundred rounds. Everyone's comments seem to echo the same sentiment. And, in fact, as with other products, I know that often times, a "visit" to a factory service center can leave you better off, even if just because it's had an extra inspection and some tweaking.
