Minor transporting firearm on plane

Can a minor who is 16 years old transport a firearm on a plane?

I looked on TSA's website and found everything about transporting the firearm on the aircraft, but saw nothing about an age requirement.

Forget the TSA, it's typically not lawful for a minor to posses firearms, outside of a few exceptions. As far as I know, 'taking a trip on a plane', is not one of the exceptions.

If we're talking about handguns I'd agree with you but what are the proscriptions on juvenile POSSESSION of longarms?

The firearm in question is a long gun, shotgun to be exact. It will be used for hunting.

The transport will also be within Pennsylvania if that makes a difference.

Good catch. I don't see a definition of "firearm" contained in 6110.1, so IMO, it defaults to the definition found in 6102, which does not include traditional longarms.

Dont know if a minor can travel with a long gun or not.
But have you thought about sending the shotgun UPS next day air to his destination?

Beat me to it. That would be my suggestion. It will cost about the same considering most airlines will charge you for it as an extra bag. That and you wont have to go through the possible headaches.

Also, when you do travel with a firearm you have to pick it up at a separate designated baggage claim and the person must also show ID.

So if there was some new guy or a person who really likes to get off on a power trip, they may not let a minor take possession of the gun.
Not saying they are allowed to do it, but we all know how fools in a authority work.

If that's the case, it must be for long guns. I haven't traveled with long guns, but plenty of times with handguns and never had to pick up at a special baggage claim or show ID. Honestly, I don't see it's any of the airlines' business to treat guns any differently.

To the OP, it may be prudent to give the airline a call. Sometimes, TSA may not have a problem with it as there seem to be no laws against it, but the airline may. It happened to me before that the Southwest counter person was a complete jerk about my loose rounds, but TSA never had any problem with it the multiple trips before.

Being a long arm, you can also use the USPS to mail it to the location that the youth will be hunting. If a relative, for example, mail it to them and they will give it to the person when they show up to hunt. After the hunt, the relative can mail it back to you. Also, USPS, even going Priority Mail, is cheaper than UPS and only takes a couple of days. I just mailed a rifle, Priority Mail, insured, with delivery confirmation to a place in IL. It cost about $25.00 for everything and it arrived 3 days after I sent it.
