Why do YOU need a gun? You're huge!
If this is a repeat thread, sorry, I looked.
At a birthday party last night my wife proudly showed some of our friends her Utah permit (PA soon to come). Everyone asked if I had a permit and if I carried a gun. I answered, "of course". Some people I didn't know real well asked why I needed a gun, and who would be crazy enough to mess with me. My standard response is that I don't like to run, I make a big target for someone else with a gun, and if people are crazy enough to mess with me a few .45's in the chest might be the only thing that stops them. The guy who was joking about it lives in MD and is a big hunter, he was impressed and offered to take me duck hunting down the Eastern shore.
I am 6'7", 340 lbs. and the gym is my second home. I can handle myself, but I carry so I leave nothing to chance.
Do any other "big" guys face the same situation when people know you carry?

Just because you're big don't mean you won't get eaten...Rules are written in the stone,
Break the rules and you get no bones,
all you get is ridicule, laughter,
and a trip to the house of pain.

At 6' 5" and 300 I get asked the same question constantly....and my answer is basically the same as yours ....I have been in several fights in my life, and some people just don't give a Damn how big you are.

Re: Why do YOU need a gun? You're huge!
My ex gf said the same thing about me when we ran into each other last year. All I said wad that it was nice of her to remember my junk. I'm 5'10 and a muscular 220, but that's hardly huge.
I do, however, get people who know me who say "why do you need to carry...you were a Marine!" As if that deters anyone these days. The last thing I want to do is hurt you... but believe me, it's on the damned list.

Re: Why do YOU need a gun? You're huge!
At 6'1/240 I don't look as nearly as impressive as the first posters. But given my ubershort haircut and very unfriendly eastern european facial expression I get that question a lot. And my response is the same as in the OP. If anyone is crazy enough to mess with me I definitely want to have at least a ninemil on me to defend my eastern european ass. I just don't want to take chances.

Re: Why do YOU need a gun? You're huge!
I get asked that question often by people who know me. I am 5"11" and 350lbs. I am know to be quite strong with a good chin. I tell them I don't want to be shot, stabbed, or bludgened so I carry a gun.
Some people just plain suck.

Re: Why do YOU need a gun? You're huge!
Although I think the responses here are good, I have an additional thought to add, and it is a response to the use of the word "need" (or "feel".)
Without fail, every conversation I have had with someone who is either anti-gun, or just doesn't understand, is to first address the many false assumptions brought to light by their questions.
Example: "Why do you feel the need to carry that?"
Answer (and I'm being much more brief here than I am with them) "It has nothing to do with "feelings", and it has nothing to do with "need". Now, what was your question again?" It usually forces them to start thinking, something they weren't doing a moment ago.
It works. Once they realize the inappropriate and inaccurate nature of the way they framed their question, the answers I give make much more sense to them. Or, it at least embarrasses them to see how easily they were caught asking leading questions.
I encourage them to think things through critically and logically, and I explain how I have done exactly that.
Trying to feel" your way through important life decisions is how a 5-year-old gets through life, not a rational, intelligent adult.

While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.
