Didn't even think I was going to open carry...
I am mostly a conceal carry guy, so far.
Lately though, with the weather changing so fast between the time I leave my house and the time I get to where I am going, I have been open carrying.
I leave with a fleece or jacket on and by the time I get to <insert location here> it is too warm to wear a jacket.
Lately I have been removing my jacket and just open carrying.
I don't think I even meant to the first time I did it.
I was not going to wear a jacket and be uncomfortably warm.
Being a regular attendee here (and learning I was within my legal rights to carry this way) I just took off the jacket and went about my business.
Since then I have been doing it more frequently.
I haven't had a look yet.
Nobody has mentioned it, period.
I guess it can be said I broke my OC cherry when I didn't expected to do so.
I am also finding I am more comfortable, not less, carrying this way.
How did you guys make the transition from CC to OC?

Re: Didn't even think I was going to open carry...
I never even thought about OCing until joining this forum and discovering it was legal. Even after finding out I was allowed to, I still did not want to do it, as I had been carrying concealed ever since turning 21 and didn't see the point.
Late summer 2009 I met up with a few of the forum members here to go Harrisburg in an effort to get House Bill 40 (the 'Castle Doctrine') passed. That was the first time I had ever seen an OCer in this state, let alone sit down and have breakfast with a few of them and spend a good portion of the day together in the capitol building. I also talked with a couple of them about why they do it and what it's like. I still didn't think it was really for me until one day I had something to do, the weather was warm, and I already had my OWB holster on (as I did OC in my house for years)... and that's how I got started.
I've been OCing now for about a year and a half or so. Outside of school, of course, I'd say I OC about half the time and CC the other half. It all depends what I'm doing and where I'm going. Most of the time I don't even think about it, however there are some places I just don't like OCing... Such as buffets. Hate it.
Congrats on your first OC's!loose≠lose; you're=you are; 'your' shows possession.

Congrats on joining in the fun. I never really OC'ed until joining here either. I made the switch just by trying it out a few times and realizing how much more comfortable it was for me. Now I very rarely CC unless I'm going somewhere I know there will be an issue with it and I don't feel like dealing with the hassles.

Awesome story man! Its great to hear people having fun enjoying their right. I usually tend to CC just because what I carry is sometimes small. If I can find a good holster for my SR9 that rides a little lower so I dont have to pull up my shirt and tuck it behind it I will OC more often.
But I will oc on a regular basis when I get my full size 357

Re: Didn't even think I was going to open carry...
I stared open carry after finding out it was legal in this forum. At first I thought it was a bad idea but now I believe that people should see guns more frequently to get them used to the idea that there are lots of guns out there and that many people carry them - I think it will reduce the "freak out" factor.
In my exprience, OC does not get comments most of the time; however, I have had several negative experiences so you should be prepared for them.
I had one woman in a supermarket start yelling that she would not have gone into the store if she had known that there was going to be a man with a gun there. I informed her that it was my right to carry and of course that just provoked her more. She kept yelling at me. (can you say "freak out" factor?) It was a little unnerving.
I think she wanted the manager to come running but no employee or manager appeared to tell me I could not carry in their store. I did get looks from everyone in the store at that point, including the cashiers, but nobody said I could not carry there - you should know that on private property, if the owner wants, they can deny you carry and you must comply. I think in this case, the staff at the store were actually glad to see someone with a gun - it was in a bad neighborhood.
In a second case, I walked into a Giant Eagle and an off duty police officer who was providing security yelled: "Whoa, Whoa, Whoa - you can't bring that in here." We had a brief discussion where I told him with all due respect that I thought he was wrong but agreed to cover up my piece with my shirt.
So expect some negative experiences and be prepared for them. Its up to you though to decide how to handle them.Last edited by Tokamak; April 10th, 2011 at 09:06 AM.
