for long range, .308 hand down.

Not the .223 isn't accurate round. But because of lack of weight, .223 projectile moves alot with wind, which would only be magnified as you shoot longer distances.
my next long gun purchose would be something in .308. Springfield National match M1A is top on my list.

But they are something like $2300...

Depends on how far long distance is for you.

But in general .308 with have more accuracy at greater distances than .223

Which rifle are you looking at?

Are you limited to those choices, cause I guess the long rangers are getting into 6.8 SPC, and 6.5mm Grendel. <--I think those are right

    I vote 308 as well.

The nice thing about the 308 is there is a readily available supply of match grade ammunition. Kind of nice if you're not a reloader.

    Have you considered a 243?

By long range do you mean 300 yards? 600 yards? 800 yards? 1,000 yards?

If you only plan on shooting out to 300 or so...the .223 will work, and save your shoulder and wallet...

That is next on my list as well. The National match is more like 1750$ I priced one today. The Super Match is 2300$ to 2600$
