WOW! 3" #4 magnum shell locked my 590 up!
I shot a 3" #4 magnum shell with my Mossy 590 and it really boomed! The weird thing is that it locked the pump up tight! I had to really tug on it to get it to eject the shell. The barrel is chambered for 2-3/4 and 3" but is a magnum 3" too much for it? Needless to say, I didn't shoot any more yet!

A 3" mag shot out of a 3" chamber? Dude ...
It should say on the barrel something to the effect of 'Shoot 3" shells only. No Magnums".
heh .. send it back to Mossberg for a warranty issue.
Seriously if all that happened was a 'lock-up', consider yourself lucky.
Also, the fit and finish of the Mossberg shotguns are a little .. well .. unfinished (for lack of a better term).
You might have a burr or two, just waiting to get lapped.
My remedy for my sticky mossy action was to slam the butt of the shotgun on the ground while only holding the forearm.
Crude, but effective.
After relieving the action, ditch the mag shells and stick to 2 3/4". You wouldn't want that barrel to blow up, would you?Last edited by Little Cloud; April 4th, 2011 at 07:12 AM. Reason: burr

It doesn't say anything about magnums...just 2-3/4" and 3" only. It was a 3" shell! LOL

Mine was more than sticky...I down right had to muscle it back to eject the spent 3" magnum shell. It cycled fine for some more 2-3/4" after that. Just that mag shell locked her up pretty tight.
Does anyone know if the 590 is rated for magnum loads or not?

Re: WOW! 3" #4 magnum shell locked my 590 up!
I have a 2.75/3." receivered 870 that requires very little effort to extract any shell fired from it. Dirty or not. Magnum, or otherwise and any combination in between. It has never been harder to cycle from one shell to another.
Unless everyone else has the same issues... I would expect something isn't quite right. In that linked thread it looks like sending it back to Mossberg can actually get it fixed.
But you should also consider the prescribed remedy of cleaning the chamber well if you have been shooting a bunch of 2.75" shells previous to the 3". Could just be crud build up making the longer 3" shell stick.
And then fire a 3" magnum shell again and see if it sticks. If it does, I would take it down and give it a closer look.

Could be a dirty chamber...I have fired mostly 2.75" as long as I've owned the gun. This is the first time I tried 3"

It should safely handle any factory load in 3". I would try to clean it real good and if that don't work you might consider taking it to a gumsmith or sending it back to Mossberg to have the problem corrected.

hey rocketfoot, try cleaning the chamber well. it should handle all 3 inch shells. my 590 works well with everything. even my 500 super shorty pops out 3 inchers with no problem even with the recoil. just be careful until you figure it out no injuries wanted here. when in doubt see a pro.
