Carrying a shotgun in NY???

I'm leaving to visit my sister in upstate NY in the morning. I like to be prepared for the worst and I know I can't take my handgun or "evil assault rifle". However- can I take my Mossberg 930SPX and lock it in the cargo box in the back of my suv if it is not loaded? I don't plan on getting pulled over and I know I don't have to consent to a search of the lock box but I'm wondering if what I want to do is legal?

Just do not go into the 5 boroughs of New
York city and you will be OK with a Shotgun unloaded and locked away.

When i lived on Long Island we had many out of state shooters from PA and NJ come out to Calverton to shoot with us. No probs.

Using Calverton as a basis for "it's-OK-to-do" is a bit of a a stretch. When I was shooting out there, Calverton could be a pretty wild place. Guys pulling up with full auto guns out of the back of a truck (more than once) - a serious no-no in NY.
As far as carrying a firearm from PA into NY is concerned, if you are legally allowed to possess the shotgun in PA, since NY State (not NYC) has no restrictions against possession of long guns by adults, you can legally bring the SG with you.
