    Default The 629-1 Completed!

I finally got the rear sight assembly and a set of decent wood grips on it. Total investment (including the gun): $450. I am happy!

Thanks! It's a .44 Magnum. In fact, I just got off the phone with S&W, and found that based on S/N, it was manufactured in August 1988.

    Neither. It's a .44 magnum, and it's very sexy.

Oops. 30 seconds too slow. So how much did the gun itself cost you?

$299 at Tanner's "as is" (or rather, "as was"). It had come into the shop earlier the same morning I wandered in. The seller had previously had a scope on it, which he removed prior to sale, and had lost the rear sight assembly. At that price, I had to grab it. I was able to find an eBay seller who had a new rear sight assembly up for auction. Ultimately, that cost me $110, and though it seems high, that's the market for those now - even used. The grips were about $40 through CDNN Sports.

Either way, not too shabby. $450ish for a stainless pre lock in .44? Not bad at all.

I see those going for between $600 and $850 on Gunbroker, so I think I did well. This one's a keeper.

    While I've got you here:
Based on threads I've seen around the forums, I understand that the "sliding noise"/"rattle" I hear when tipping the up and down is normal. I understand that's the hammer block I'm hearing. Would that be the case on a 1988 mfg date gun as well?

She is beautiful. I have never shot a .44 mag. how do they compare in felt recoil to a .357 in a comparable gun/barrel length.

Ranking in terms of, 44 is more but not unbearable.

Or holy crap this 44 almost blew my arm off.

Im looking to get my first full sized revolver. Going a similar route to marks could be an option.
