Round Your Skills as you De-Round Your Gut.
Last weekend I put about 1000 miles on my car driving down to North Carolina for three days of hard combatives training with Executive Protection Specialist and former French Foreign Legion unarmed combat instructor Nick Hughes. Nick is the best in the business and we were training striking, grappling, multiple opponents and weapon use and defense until midnight every day.
Going down there and getting my ass kicked all weekend reminded me to post a follow up to last week's blogging on our own worst enemy.
A bunch of questions were raised on how to drop the pounds. While changing your eating habits are critical in losing weight, exercise can not be overlooked as increasing your lean mass not only helps shed the pounds, but keep them off and frequent aerobic activity has huge benefits for your cardiovascular health. This is where most people have problems as going to the gym is simply no fun for most of the population and it's depressing getting suckered into a long term gym contract you'll never use by some hard sales pitching meathead.
All the weight I dropped was with diet, simple calisthenics, hiking, and martial arts. Let's focus on the last one: Martial arts is not just a great way to get in shape, but is absolutely necessary to round out your self defense skill set. We know statistically that the vast majority of violent encounters will occur at less that 7 yards, and a good majority of those will be touching distance. It is very likely that you will have to go hands on instead of or to facilitate accessing a weapon.
In the general shooting community and among those who carry weapons, most are woefully unprepared for such a situation. Most people figure they'll simply rely on their "gun fu" to get themselves out of any violent encounter. Not convinced? Try wearing a martial arts t-shirt to a gun show and count how many times you hear the words, "well I'd just shoot 'em." muttered between some fat bodys at the table behind you. They are kidding themselves. You think they have guns on them anyway? Of course not, you're not allowed to carry loaded weapons in the gun show...or the airport...or New Jersey...or national parks...or lots of places that people don't carry for legal or other reasons. How many of you have said you leave the gun at home when going out for a couple drinks? What if the situation is borderline or inappropriate for the use of lethal force? Just shoot 'em, huh?
If you're entire defensive strategy relies on your handgun, your mindset is flawed. Pray you never get that rude awakening that's waiting for you.
Kill two birds with one stone. Become a well rounded fighter, and maybe shed some pounds while you're doing it.
With that said, I'm getting a quick bite to eat then it's off to the Judo club for 2 hours.Last edited by MarcS; December 14th, 2007 at 08:32 PM.

Not so much to do with fitness but we agree yet again. Never bring a gun to a knife fight.

yep, now i have to think of something to post next week
Note to the readers, you don't learn how to fight in a weekend nor can it be a one time thing if you plan to use it to get fit (obviously). I've been to over a dozen seminars with Nick over the past few years, I practice back here with training partners and i engage in other martial arts.Last edited by MarcS; December 14th, 2007 at 11:40 PM.

Good post!!!!....agreed %100
Understanding the importance of a strong "mind" and "body" is the first step in a successful journey...........skipping this step often leads to ones own defeat before the fight even begins...........Μολών λαβέ

I dunno....... I fought college level Judo for 3 years and I still practice good gun handling .........but I also practice "run fu".
I try to avoid fights. I must be good at it. In working in the worst parts of the city with the delinquent population, the last time I had to fight was 1990.
